    A/C Question

I am installing a stock, under dash, a/c unit in my J20...I plan to use a new style (smaller) pump, condenser, drier, etc...from one of the Hot Rod suppliers...Question: I would like to use R134 so do I need to replace the stock expansion valve assembly or can I use the old one?? I ask the question because I thought someone told me that the hose connections are different with R134...o-rings vs old style flared or tapered ends....any first hand experience out there???

I am currently finishing up my install and conversion. I replaced my expansion valve. It was only $11. Cheap insurance if you ask me. You need to replace the O rings, but there were no o rings at those connections on mine.

Just remember if you have O-ring find some PGA oil or R-134A oil and lightly coat them this will help prevent leaks I also suggest to put small drop of oil on the threads of the fittings if they are compression this will help to guarantee a tight and leak free system.

        134

So if the connections don't have o-rings now, they don't need to be replaced with new ones that do have them?? I will get a new expansion valve..sounds like a good idea but the hoses and everything else for the 134 conversion still confuses me....is there a good source for all the components to convert these old guys over??

I kept the old hoses, just replaced the expansion valve ($11), the dryer ($35), and the compressor ($111). The old system was still holding a charge when I removed it from the donor truck. If there was no o ring, its not that kind of fitting.

There seem to be guys on here that didnt swap anything, just converted and are ok. I dont have that kind of luck

I didn't replace anything but the refrigerant (used one of those kits with the R134a with the lube in it)- not saying that's the best way to do it, but 1 year later it still makes cold on pretty hot days.

              Thanks

Excellent...I think I can do this knowing that I won't have to tear apart my dash in a month....thanks
