Ok, got the overflow tank installed. If you look closely between the washer bottle at the right and the alternator on the left, you can make out the 24 oz stainless overflow tank. Opened up some room over here and I hope to put the air intake in that open space.

Thought I'd post a pic from the other side. Also have the new Red Top battery temporarily sitting on my old battery tray until I work out that. However, you can see the leads that I hooked up to the battery to try stuff out under it's power.

RT is all dried in, and next Friday it's off to the fab shop for the Y pipe. Then start up.

I better call Mdcptman as soon as I know when they are going to get the Y pipe on!!!

Well, it finally happened...

RT has left the building!

Loaded up and ready for the trip

And sitting in the lift position at the shop

The shop owner said they hope to get to it by Wednesday. Given it isn't running and is sitting in the only "inside" lift at the shop, I hope they will get to it a little faster.

At any rate, it's there and the car guys at the shop gave RT a few compliments.

Brad, sorry for the little pics, but the Tinypic site was giving me flak, so I had to use Photobucket again.

So, with no RT to play with today, I think I'll go watch the Eagles play Brazil with some of my old rugby buddies.

Holy cow, look at that Jeep and that shop! Wow. That's progress and that's getting close.

The pictures are too freaking small!

A little late I know but thought maybe this company might have something that fits our steering columns.

Interesting. When I get it running and can drive it to see what gear it's in, I may be looking into one of those. But first, driving it would be a real treat!

A BIG Texas THANK YOU to Strode! The mystery of the tiny pictures is over. Strode diagnosed the problem and a "reset" of the features in PhotoBucket and the pics are now BIG.

Ok, I picked a Razor grill for a 79. Not year correct I know, but I like it.

Now my questions is "does my old grill need the black accents on it?"

If you can't make it better why waste your time. No use repeating the orignal mistakes. I'm to old to push it that's why.

Well RT fired up, but it is on life support. We fired it up last Tuesday, only to find a few problems with it. 1) the MAS air sensor wiring had 3 wires loose in it causing some computer issues. Those were soldered and put back into the plug. This was a PSI issue, but fixed at the shop. 2) the 05 Avalanche had a 6 wire TAC connection harness, but when re-programmed, PSI set it up for the MUCH more common 9 wire harness. The only GM we could find that used the 6 wire harness was the 05 trucks, EVERYTHING else uses the 9 wire. So we can't get it to "rev" up until the new harness comes in today, because the drive by wire won't function and won't open the throttle until all 9 wires are connected. 3) some of the injectors were sticking, to be expected since the motor sat for 3 years. They have been cleaned and are working now, waiting on the harness.

So with any luck, and the overnight express from PSI for the TAC harness, RT should be running soon.

I did get to hear the BJ's Thorley exhaust rumble for a bit, and I know the alternator was working, because I saw the gauge. Past those two things, it wasn't a great first start up.

hey, if thats all that was wrong, you are doing great! OEM's spend a lot of time and a lot of money paying teams of people to get it right. A dude in his garage gets a pass on a few things here and there Can't wait to hear how you like driving the ol' beast with the new engine!

Ok, lots of "codes" showing on the computer, 14 to be exact. The new TAC harness fixed several AND made the throttle work correctly. All 8 cylinders are firing correctly and RT idles and accelerates like we would think. Now, down to only 2 codes showing on the PCM, getting the fans to work correctly, figuring out why the tach isn't working (may be related to 1 of the codes or I may not have wired the plug correctly - I'm hoping for the first one, as so far my wiring has been correct, thanks Rick) and getting the brakes up and running and it should be ready for that first drive. Oh, and we are going to finish up the Vintage Air system before we go on that first drive too.

It's getting close.

Awesome

Sorry I missed the start up.

Huge milestone. You have to remember it could have been a lot worse.

Happy you're on your way. The bugs were expected.

The shop has been slow on RT, taking care of some more pressing matters, like guys who need their car for work. So I have been playing in the shop on small items.

I have 4 79 Jeep sun visors and was trying to decide which to use when my brother had a couple of XJ visors, but neither had a vanity mirror.

Mdcptman had gotten me a couple of Tahoe visors that wouldn't fit, but they had vanity mirrors.

So I got to thinking about trying to combine the two. So I took the material off of the XJ visor and guess what...

There was a blank for a mirror.

So I took the mirror out of the Tahoe visor, and guess what...

That's right, the vanity mirror fits the blank in the XJ visor. Now I'm wiring them up so when I get RT back I can see if I can make them fit. Comparing them to the 79 visors, it looks like they just might work. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

It's alive! There really is a video there. You have to go through Photobucket to watch. If someone will tell me how to post a video, I'll do it.

The engine runs fine, and is relatively quiet with the BJ's exhaust system bolted to the custom "Y" pipe that ties to the headers. After the THIRD alternator, that's right, the 3rd alternator, it is charging just fine. The AC compressor is kicking on like it's supposed to. The gauges are working, now it's time to button up that AC stuff inside so I can take RT home and finish my work.

In the video you may notice the red top Optima up against the firewall. That space was cleared out by the Vintage air. The new air filter now fits neatly in the space where the battery once went. Anybody need a stock battery tray in great shape?
