Ouch... guess it's time for an upgrade

I have had a vibe developing in my rear diff over the past few months prior to my engine swap. Since I got it back this week, I noticed that it has gotten worse. As I was backing it out of the driveway last night, I heard/felt a pop kind of noise, but it only occurred once and went away. I decided then that I would look into it today. When I went out around lunch today I saw a huge pool of gear lube under my rear diff. It was slowly just draining. While my head was under there I saw a new drop form and then drop to the ground, so it was pretty fast. For the life of me I couldn't figure out why the seal would have just suddenly completely given up like that.

When I took off the cover, I found this!

It looks like my spider gears have reached the end of their road. I don't see any marks on the ring gear, so I think I am OK there. However, I was cleaning off the cover with some brake cleaner and found this!

I guess that explains the leak!

So, tonight I went ahead and ordered an Aussie locker for the rear. I thought I was done spending money for a while after my engine swap, but apparently I was wrong. At least I get an upgrade out of it!

Was that hole made from the inside or outside? Looks almost like someone drilled it. A quick spot weld should fix it up, so you don't have to buy a new cover too.

Made from the inside. The real kicker is that I just traded my welder away on Monday! Bad timing.

Well then you can go show the new owner how to do a quick spot weld.

Yeah after getting my rear axle torn down I found the roll pin that holds the cross shaft broke allowing the shaft to hit the pinion when it went around. But it doesnt look anywhere near as cool as your guys carnage

Hate it when that happens! Be glad you get to deal with this now and not on Imogene Pass.

In a '61 Impala I once owned, I had a bearing come apart and one of the rollers got caught between the ring and pinion. It fired a piece right through the cast iron case and left a ding in the floor! Made a heck of a bag too!

I think that new 4BT may be too much torque for you -you'd better swap it out for a gas engine

I was telling my wife the same thing last night (as I was breaking the news that I had just bought a locker!)
