    Thriftsides & Stepsides: Post Pics

    I noticed a difference in the side skirts, the 62 are straight on the bottom edge, while the 66's bed skirts have a slight curve and a different edge. The 66's bed came from a 50's era willys truck... so calling all thriftsides and sportside trucks, post your pics!

    I like that '62.

    Actually, wouldn't it be a '63 model, just built in '62?

    I love how arguements end as soon as Ristow comments. Ristow is right...again.

      I' d really like to have a thriftside but i only have the later sportside
      I'll look in a parts catalog if there was different refs for the skirts ?

      By the way, 66stepside, do you know if the rear fenders of the thriftsides are different from the earlier willys pickup fenders ? I was told that the cuts for the skirts were different, but i don't know for the dimensions ?

        Thanks!

        That's what I tried telling the DMV here when I went to register it! The truck hadn't been registered since 03. She typed in the VIN and she went with the computer's records... So somewhere in the system an early enough built 63, comes out as a 62? It was pretty weird.

        I was bummed because I had a 63 State plate I was going to put on it and they told me it had to be a 62 plate. The plates changed in 63 to the white background. 58-62 WA ST plates were a dark hunter green.

        The fenders appear to be all different. I actually referenced that in my 66 build post... I buy all the Thriftside fenders that I can find, if they're salvageable. Every pair I have (maybe 3, or 4 sets) all are different.

        The cut outs for skirts and/or the leaf springs all seem to be different. It does make sense: FC, 200, 300, 3800, etc. all had different configurations for their leaf springs based upon their classifications.

        The bedsides themselves are different, too. The pre-63 ones are a two piece side with a 4" piece on the bottom edge, whereas the post-63 are a one piece bedside.

        I'd like to see some close up shots of the Sportsides' bedside to see if they're a one, or two piece side. Also, are the side skirts flat, or curved in some way for the Sportsides?

          All the fenders are different? you mean for each year?

          bedsides are onepiece on the sportside

          skirts are flat, just smaller to accomadate the larger fenders

            Originally Kaiser built them as a 63 model year but were early released so the early ones were advertised and sold as 62's. Also back in those days a lot of DMV's registered new vehicles by date sold. Model year change over on the assembly line is generally July so even if it was built in Sept64 as a 65 model but sold before 31 Dec65 it was likely registered as a 64. Also worked the other way too If it was built in June 64 as a 64 model but not sold till after 01Jan 65 it was likely registered as a 65. Made sense back then since Kaiser didn't put model years in the VIN nor did AMC till 1972.

              If we look at the parts ref :

              The following thriftside parts have the same ref whatever the years (SWB):
              - tailgate : 666 039
              - rear fenders : 958 171
              - skirts
              - box panel front assembly : 959 055
              - box panel assembly rear posts : 958 181, 958 182
              - box floor pan

              The thriftside box panel side assembly Ref change in 74
              958 189 -> 989 697
              958 190 -> 989 698

              Parts ref common to thriftsides and sportsides :
              - tailgate : 666 039
              - box panel front assembly : 959 055

                    No, I mean they're all different by model: FC, 47-62 truck rating, 63-72 rating. So, it varies by bed length and spring packs.

                    Mud 89, that's good information on what is inter-changeable. I love the truck, that garage looks like it's been around awhile, too!

                        Jeep truck.com and a few other sites like it always have one, or two for sale. When you get one, post build pics!
