Do they offer a Spool for a dana 44 or should I just weld the rear?. I got a $600 waggy and I am not dropping the money for a Detroit. I actually have driven a welded rear truck and I also had a Detroit and the welded rear was atleast a bit more predictable. If you keep the tire pressures equal then usually you are just fine.
Spools for waggy D44's?

Thats awesome, great price. Im going to be running 35" tires MAX, maybe even 33" tires so I think if I use my head I wont break to much being locked up. I ran a dana 44 front axle on 38" tires with an ARB and didnt break anything on a Suburban(did have chromo shafts and CTM joints however). SO another question, I can lock up the front also as long as I install manual hubs correct?. I wouldnt wanna be running around with fulltime hubs and a locked front diff. Anyone have any hub reccomendations for my 86 Grand waggy up front?.86 Waggy, Rear home brew shackle flip, front add-a-leaf and Chevy shackles, fender trim, WARN M8000, Lincoln locked rear, 15x10 rims and 33x12.50 Muds, 3.54 cogs

I am certainly not the expert but I don't think you can't run manual hubs unlocked on a NP228. I think it would damage the internals but if you swapped to a NP208 it would work. That is my plan, eventually. Others will chime in for sure. As far as putting a spool in the front with unlocked hubs, I don't see why not.
Edit: sorry i put "can" instead of "can't". I don't know why I do that sometimes. I am getting old...Last edited by srobertsfsj; 02-14-2012, 06:16 AM.Scott R.

Welp...I just limped it home. Apparently spools don't like Dana44's and 36's. I've got two holes on my rear diff cover. I ran up to the parts store to buy a battery and I heard teeth break as I turned in. Got out, saw the stream of gear oil pouring out and jumpd back in and took the most direct route home. Dang-it! I was running 4.10 thick gears. I'll pull the diff cover off and check it out later. I knew I was pushing the limits...ROMANS 12:1-2

Well I figured mine out. The shop that installed the spool didn't loc-tite the ring gear bolts and they started to back out. One came all the way out and got eaten by the ring gear. Lost a couple teeth on the ring gear. Pinion gear looks okay. I'm going to call the shop and see what they can do....ROMANS 12:1-2

IIRC correctly I used the stock ones out of the D44 carrier. That was a long time ago when I installed it so I may be mistaken. I ran this in the orange 74 on many Moab and Ouray trips as well as Holy Cross and a bunch of CO trails.Scott R.

I also ran bias ply tires which were more forgiving on the trails and on the street. I would think radials would be alot harder on axle shafts with a spool or miniScott R.
