    Oil Pump rebuild question

    Hi Everybody:
I'm about to build and install my oil pump into my 360 which is on a stand.
Just wanted to double check a few things. From what I gather packing it with petroleum jelly is past practice and I should be ok globing assembly lube on the gears. Correct? The instructions from Melling say to swirl the bits in clean oil before instal.

Thanks for the help. I really need to update my build thread. The good and the bad!

I just oil them during assembly and prior to start-up, I spin the pump with a drill to pre-lube the whole system.

I've never packed one with anything.
I simply primed it via homemade priming tool.

Just did this last night... I wiped oil on them, packed with Vaseline, and filled the oil filter with oil. It did take a few seconds to prime though.

NO VASELINE! assembly lube or oil. what do you think all that petroleum jelly does to the flow thru the oil filter?

Here in AZ it melts right away and blends into the oil, I have done this and verified oil flow to the rockers and gauge before starting.

or the flow is going thru the filter bypass until it dissolves. there is no way that crap is pushing thru a filter at room temp. and of all the stuff out there to use-stuff meant to be a engine lube,i kinda chuckle at it.

i aint saying it causes instant failure. just saying its really dumb.

but in all seriousness do not use valve grinding past to prime an oil pump.

Well thank you very much. Typically with my first build every move I make requires me to read the TSM, forums, Haynes and eventually it leads to paralysis by analysis!

Awhile back I purchased the oil pump mid plate and priming tool. I avoided the vaseline and went with a little oil on the gears. My engine stand is not moving so I had to build it from the bottom. Used a little of the High tack gasket stuff to keep everything is place. Torque to spec and wait and see I guess!

                  Thanks

Vasoline is not bad to use on a fresh motor as a priming help before you prime with a drill, it will help prime quicker and the melting point is very low. You can use nothing and prime with a drill, it will just take longer. The Vasoline will push through the filter with pressure as it mixes with the oil. Do what you want and feel good with, just prime before starting.

Interesting I actually never really though about why the vaseline.
I will for sure prime up before firing.
                      Thanks

If you spin the pump with your fingers and can't feel it sucking with your fingers over the ports your tolerances are a bit loose.
