    Brought her home today

Picked up this 87 GW from the original owner today. Though I bought it through and intermediary which was wierd and probably shady.

Anyway, bone stock and 126,xxx miles. On the plus side it is a California original and the body is in great shape. Fun to drive and almost all electrical systems work.

on the minus side; I had to drive it 2 hours home and I noticed getting on the highway that the oil pressure gauage went to zero and pretty much stayed there. I was worried but took it with a grain of salt since the speedo acts like its crazy. Well, about half way home the knocking started. Real quiet at first and got louder and louder.I pulled off the highway and into a gas station and let it rest while my tail car caught up to me (he got stuck in traffic). After resting for a few minutes the knocking went a way, but the guage hovered at zero. I ended up driving it home at about 45-55mph for the last 35 miles. So, yeah. Thats a bummer. Other items include the usuals like clogged drains, and slow rear windows, etc.

I'm not a mechanic and between restoring an old mid century home, starting a family, my current career and attempting to start a new one - I will be finding a mechanic on Monday. She needs a good cleaning and going through - driven very lightly / almost stored for the last three years. I think she will be fun when she gets her act together.

Forget the mechanic, might as well start learning because soon enough you'll be your own personal mechanic

Sounds like he doesn't have a lot of time. He had me at starting a family. One of the reasons I sold my wag. Spent more time under it than with the kid and not enough money for someone else to mess with it. Now she's back home with Jake. Kinda bittersweet.

                  WELCOME & I CAN SYMPATHIZE

Your white waggy looks like a FSJ angel with that sunlight pouring down on it. Super nice! I've got young kids and plenty of chores and projects around the little farm. Hopefully you'll find your waggy as a way for you and the family to get away from it all and enjoy the outdoors. Tinkering on them is pretty rewarding too .

Nice looking wag! Bummer about the oiling issue.

When it started knocking you should have stopped and had it towed.
Damage was done driving it for an hour w/ low oil pressure & knocking.

First thing I'd do is go buy a mechanical oil pressure gauge and see what kind of pressure it actually has.

Are we talking catastrophic paper-weight engine, needs a re-build, or shame on you damage?

Unfortunately driving a knocking engine usually causes pretty bad damage.

But don't start worrying until you get someone to check it. Just don't drive it.

full rebuild is in order, resize the connecting rods and hopefully save the crank with a good grinding. gotta find a quality machine shop.
