    4BTA cummins in my J10

Been awhile since Ive posted anything. For the short version. Bought my truck of the bay. Brought it home and did body and paint. Previous owner put a 6.2, TH400, divorced NP205. Also threw in dana 60s front and rear.

Bought a Cummins 4bta and phase two started. Also bought new NV4500 (chevy with dodge input to avoid 5th gear nut prob) and dana 300. I kept the np205 so I now have a doubler with a stub shaft between the D300 and NP205.

6.2 threw a rod on the way to its motor swap.....irony? I would swear the 6.2 makes more power with a cracked block and hole in the oil pan. Anyway, its almost done. Have to run battery/alternator connections, connect fuel lines, and mount clutch pedal.

    ENJOY!

'67 badging to match the grille (it denotes a 327. When I would fuel up at the diesel, people would hear the 6.2, and ask if it were a diesel and did I know I was fueling diesel and not gas. I replied that I had a 327 and ran across some 16 to 1 racing pistons and run those to burn diesel for more power and fuel economy! I plan to resume that)

You are my new hero. I love these diesel conversions. At the risk of offending, or sounding stupid, why the 4BT? Was this a monetary decision or is there something about the 6BT that make that conversion a giant PITA. I know those 4BT's rock as a transplant into Lil' Jeep and scout 80's, but I would have though a six would be the choice for a large J truck.

Don't get me wrong, it's awesome and given the choice between a gas guzzling jtruck or a diesel rig w a 4BT the answer would be..diesel. Anyone who has the resources a brains to tackle something like this gets my home-school engineer of the year award. your an inspiration. good luck with the rest of it.

                        answers

The front bumper is a BJs Offroad prototype they mocked up and sold here on the board I believe.

As for why the 4bt and what it is. The 4B is just like the 6B minus two cylinders.

One is the overall legnth of the 6B. It puts the rear valve cover and injection lines way back there and would probably involve partially taking the motor out for some basic service. Also running an air to air aftercooler and taurus electric fans so length was critical.

Two is fuel mileage. Most people are reporting about 25-30 miles per gallon versus 17ish for the 6b. My 4B has the coveted P7100 injection pump, not the rotary. Nothing wrong with the rotary.

From the factory, my 4b was spec'd at 350 ft lbs at 1300 rpm. I have a larger turbo, put the air to air and turned the fuel fuel up one revolution. I should be at 425-450 tq now. I also had a 3200 governor spring kit installed to get the rpms up if I am towing a load and need to keep i the power band.

                        And for gearing. The axles are 4.10, NV4500 5.6 to one first, Dana 300 2.6, Np 205 1.96 for a grand total of...........................119to 1

Man that is a great lookin Jtruck! I wish I had a diesel converted one so bad. Can't wait to see the final thing with the engine and hummer wheels and what ever else you may do.

what are doing for a clutch pedal and hydraulic lines?

I hope to have my 6bt running in my 79 J20 by the end of the month. Although it will not look as good as yours as I wont be able to have it painted for a while..
