    Intermittent Wipers

I installed the Ford intermittent wiper switch along with the harness. It plugged into my '79's harness and I have 2 speeds (rt) and intermittent variable (lt). My problem is my washers don't work, they did before the swap. I can jump the red/wht wire to the pump wire and make the pump work. Is there a difference in wire position between my '79 J truck and the Ford switch? Anyone have a similar problem when doing this swap?

    THANKS, dAVID

I'd look for which terminal on the switch is hot when you push it or do whatever it is that is supposed to run the pump and connect the Red/Wht wire to it. The Red/Wht that's on Terminal #7.

Maybe that switch doesn't support a washer?

There's a really good write up in the service manual for this (schematic for this system in on page 3T-13, pinout is on 3T-14).

Put your multimeter between pins 2 (or 6, electrically 2 and 6 are the same) and 7; it should be open. Push the switch, and it should close. If that happens, your switch is good and you need to follow the wire from pin 7 to your motor and see where you are losing your signal. If that does not happen the switch is bad/wrong.

            Intermittent Wipers

Hi Antony, I bought the switch on the web. It came with the connecting harness. I have a switch from an 80's Bronco, maybe I'll try it.

              Intermittent Eipers

I did the check between pins 2 & 7, Open till washer switch is pushed, then closed. Problem is no power. The washer pump works when power is fed to it. I wonder if there is a difference between Jeep & Ford harnesses? When I plug in the 2 speed only switch I have the washers. The '79 J10 harness has pin 1 but the Ford harness and switch do not. Any suggestions?

              Thanks, David

There should be a Red/Wht jumper between 2 and 6 on the Jeep connector. 2 Is always hot through an internal path in the switch, the jumper provides the power for the washer pump.

Probably! So here is your circuit, notice there is a jumper between pin 2 and Pin 6. Do you have that? If not, make it and you should be good to go! I think Pin 1 is ground. Pin 6 is unlabled but is the input to the switch.

Thanks everyone, I found the problem! The Jeep harness had a blank space, the Ford harness also had a blank space. The they were one hole off, moved the Ford black/green tracer moved up to blank hole washers now have power a work when the switch is pushed.

Great thread.....I'll be tackling this soon, how do you get the switch out, do I have to remove my air condition duct?

                      thanks

You don't have to but you should. Makes it a lot easier. The duct on the drivers side is like 3 self taping screws and it comes off.
