I made it up and out of Black Canyon without overheating!!! To be honest, Nodoka barely had a hard time holding 50 in second gear. With all that said, I have turned around since half my tank is gone and I only had money for one tank... getting too used to the car I suppose
I really wish I had funds to get to Flagstaff, maybe next time.

Just wondering...but why were you doing 50 holding it in 2nd gear?

We silly Jerseyans don't experience many of these...."hills" that you speak of.

Wait...you did this with a stock cooling system?

Just leaving out of Black Canyon. It's 5 minutes of uphill that twice made me push 240*. I found that locking it in 2nd, run at 50, and letting everybody pass does the trick.
Here is a video of what the pass is like. Imagine me tearing up and giggling like a schoolgirl at the end...
The first time was Ok going down, but it was a floored in second gear affair the whole way back because my engine had 2 dead cylinders.
The second time was after i rebuilt the engine and I blasted down it at 80 MPH and got 18 MPG. Something went whack in the distributor on the way back up and I had to stick to 50 MPH in second gear the whole way or else it would cut out.
The next time I blasted down and back at 80 MPH with the A/C on and never went more than 1/2 throttle in high gear. Resetting the ignition timing and installing a 2150 makes a huge difference.
If you need 2nd at 50 MPH go go up that road, your engine has an issue. If it's never seen a rebuild in those 191 K miles I see on the clock, it's time.

I love how arguements end as soon as Ristow comments. Ristow is right...again.
Do you have a lock up converter in that 727? My 81 w/t w/258 did and I would have to hold it in 2nd at 45 mph because if I let it shift to 3rd the converter would lock @ 45 mph and the engine rpms would drop too much. Never made that pass unloaded so don't know how it would have done. My waggies w/o lock up always made it in 3rd except when hitting passing gear to go around someone. Think something is off CJ. (imagine doing that pass going into a curve @ 65 mph on a moonless night at 0300 and all of a sudden getting a severe case of "Death Wobble". Had to change my pants!)
