timing light troubleshooting

Interesting discovery today; intermittent rpm on plug wire #7. So I wiggle the wire and rpms return and a small tick, tick goes away... Let pressure off and tick, tick returns and rpms go back to zero. I suppose a bad crimp on the msd wire is causing this. So without touching the wire with anything but the timing light lead I increase the rpms and watch the light change from 0 to 1200ish and when I let off again it returns to 0. This only happens on #7 wire and rpms are there when the throttle is twisted and not when released.

When I get some time ill redo the crimp And check the plug and inside the cap but this method could be used if a fouled plug is suspected or in my case (hopefully) just a bad crimp although you need a digital type timing light.

Good for you. I discovered the same troubleshooting technique about 6 months ago when my #1 wasn't firing right. The RPM's were jumping so for grins I tried a different wire and it was steady. I had a cracked spark plug.

I wish someone made an affordable scope...

Actually, there is an adapter to hook to old TV sets. My buddy found one that he runs on his smartphone but he won't tell me what it is (It's supposed to be proprietary)
