What Do I Substitute for an '87 GW Starter Solenoid?

The title says it all. It looks like a common Ford solenoid, but all of the parts houses (Mopar dealer included) say it's NLA. Has anyone used a different-spec solenoid successfully? If so, what was the application? I need to get one of these pretty quickly; this is for my Mama's '87 with the Ford starting system, NOT for my '88.

Your dealer is an idiot. You may be asking for the wrong part though. It's called a starter relay. They are all the same from 1980-87. AMC p/n 575 2125.

NAPA's part number for it is ST83.

        Joe,
Actually, I was just about to edit my post and mention the part number that you posted to see if that would help. The dealer still insists that this part number is obsolete, however.

        Spectre,
Thanks for the shout about the NAPA number; one is ordered and on the way from my NAPA dealer!

        Thanks, guys!

Forget the DC dealers. They have no interest at all in pre-DC era FSJ's and just slightly better than no interest even in DC era FSJ's.

If the AMC part no (or the NAPA) doesn't pan out, then ask for a 70's generation Ford starter solenoid (or relay), say from a Mustang or Truck.

Last solenoid I bought for one of my AMC's cost me a whole $13, and they had about a gazillion of them in stock. If your parts store can't find it, get another parts store. In fact, my boat uses the exact same solenoid to raise the trim that all my AMC's use. Joe is 100% correct, your parts dealer is an effing moron. Reach across the counter and give him a slap to wake him up before asking for a part, maybe your results will be better next time.

I am need to purcahse a new Starter Relay my '86 Wag as I robbed it for my J20.

My question about Napa's Starter Relay:

They list one for $12.99, part number ST83SB, from vendor MPE
The other one is $29.99, part number ST83 from vendor ECH

                What is the difference?

Also, got one from Autozone a few years ago, was DOA...right outta the box.
Thought I had something else bigger wrong...turned out it was the new starter relay that I just installed to replace a OE that had burnt up.

MPE = Mileage Plus, their cheapo house brand.
ECH = Echlin, their premium house brand.

MPE stuff can be kinda crappy, but sometimes not.
