My first FSJ

Bought myself a 79 J-20 360/th400/ part-time convert quadra trac.

Has an un-known lift on it, may be rancho, red shock boots and bushing,(rear block) idk. Also is the snow boss package came with plow that i might sell. Going to do floor pans, rocker, and cab corners. and may an m715 style box for it, and rebuild the 360

all for 1250, and its already hauled 230 dollars worth of scrap!!

I saw this truck on pirate the other day. Glad to see you have made it to this board as well. Keep us posted on whats going on with the truck and what your plans are for it.

Nice looking truck!
Part time QT? Unlock the front hubs and see if it moves, to be sure.

I think so, it looks like an aftermarket sticker laid over the factory one in the glove box, somebody might have just put hubs on it. I could be wrong

Welcome to the Madness! Good lookin truck for 1250. The glovebox sticker on the shifter would indicate it had a part time conversion at some point, but many Quadratrac Jeeps have had the tcase replaced a time or two over the last 30 something years. It would be worth checking out just in case it is still a stock transfer case. If you have the switch in the glovebox turned to the left (counterclockwise with engine on) and the hubs unlocked, you should be able to spin the front driveshaft by hand if it is indeed converted.

The light in the instrument cluster (Emergency Drive) should be off in 2WD and on in 4WD. Are you sure the hubs released? Might want to roll it just a bit then check again.

If the front shaft does not spin freely when in 2WD and hubs unlocked, I would suspect shifter problems on the glove box vacuum switch or vacuum shifter or the Quadratrac is not converted. Try changing the rubber vacuum lines out and try it again. The ones that get the worst weather and wear are from the steel lines to the shifter on the transfer case.

There should be steel lines from near the firewall to the transfer case. If they are rubber all the way, then someone tossed them and the rubber lines could easily collapse with age and wear. Here is a vacuum diagram:

I know 4x4 works, tested it out one day last week. but I have driving 50+miles w/hubs unlocked, so they shouldnt be jammed(engaged) although I didnt coast in reverse.

Then my best guess is you do not have a part time conversion and you should leave the hubs locked to prevent damaging the limited slip differential in the transfer case. The only way to really know if it is converted (and trucks are easier than Waggys and Cheros) is to remove the inspection cover over the shifter and see what kind of shift collar is in there. There is a spring retainer nearest the vacuum diaphram on the shifter. Don't let that get away from you. You may need a light and mirror to do this with it in the truck.

This might help:

Much more Quadratrac info in a link in my signature.

Don't be fooled by others on the quality of a Quadratrac, when they work, they kick butt.

Changing tcase to D20 or NP205 - That requires:
  • a different adapter between the tcase and the tranny
  • change the tailshaft on tranny (tear down, overhaul)
  • w/NP205, frame crossmemeber modifications are probably required

find out what fluid is in it, if its atf its usually (not always) part time. if its anything else than chances are it hasnt been converted.
