Welp, it's that time of year again.......

'Ol Yeller goes in for it's annual tail pipe sniff tomorrow in order to get re-registered. So I'll administer my "emissions tune" to get it to pass and cross my fingers. Can't believe this will be the third one since dropping the new motor in already. Time flys!

Say a little prayor to the Jeep Gods for me and wish me luck!!

Good Luck! I used to worry like that, but then Massachusetts stopped testing on anything made before 1994. Thank God!

95! (heard they were upping it to 96, too) one of the smarter things the state has done in recent years.

            emission tune

What are they sniffing for these days? Fortunately , I haven't had to deal with this since leaving Wisc in '04.
I used to run it low on fuel and add a few bottles of HEET gas line antifreeze. Then Run straight to the gas station for a fillup afterwards.

            Somehow, I always passed .

Best of luck with the commie pinko's.

It took two attempts, but I got it to pass!
For first attempt, I dialed back ignition timing 15 degrees (yes, I run a lot of advance), turned up the fast idle a bit, and really leaned out the idle mixture. I get it to where it will barely stay running in gear.

It passed loaded HC and CO and idle CO with flying colors. It failed idle HC by a little less than 200 ppm. Rats!

So I envoked plan B. I dumped a gallon of alcohol in the tank and unplugged the vacuum advance, allowing a vacuum leak as well as retarding timing to 5 degrees. It would barely, I mean barely idle! It ran very hot and it kept trying to vapor lock. On the rollers, the test tech was having a hard time with it as it started bucking! It made it through though!

The result? Closer to the emissions of a Honda than a cammed, gas swilling AMC V8! My idle HC's dropped by more than 400 ppm! The test tech who did both tests was just laughing when he handed me the results.

                          Good for you .

But can you (or anyone) 'splain how/why retarding timing to 5* improves HC? I may need to know about this someday.

It is a real pain. I know the tricks to get it to pass, as long as they don't lift the hood and do a visual inspection. EGR valve and air pump have been long, long gone.

If I could ever find the time to do the body work and make her purdy, I could probably get collectors insurance and then register it as a collectable and then not have to worry about testing. Someday.
