    1976 Cherokee Build

I got my red (more like pink - oxidized red) 1976 Jeep Cherokee January 16, 2010 for $1500. It has no engine and the interior is completely stripped but almost all there. Purchased a set of 17" wheels for $300. The plan is to keep this project under or at $4500 (at least to begin with), but we will see how that works out. I was originally going to purchase a GM van for $450 and take the engine, A/C, front seats, steering column and some other stuff out of it, but it had a cracked block so decided not to go with that.

    Total Man Hours: 550:00

    Total After Selling $5644.64

The actual total is now nearly $14,500.00. I have every expense documented in a very long Excel document. I can't exactly post the whole thing up because its extremely large.

Obviously, if you can add, that adds up to over $4500 (without subtracting sold parts) but this is my absolute completion list and also the $4500 is only my alotted cash amount. If I do work in exchange for parts/paint job then that doesn't count as a part of the budget. Also, anything that I sell is being reinvested in the car.

    Welcome!

A Chevy 305??? Why? Is your Jeep automatic? It won't just bolt up to the AMC TH400, and any modest power you add to it will be sucked out by that black hole of a tranny (I hear they suck up to 40 or 50hp, not sure but it sure as heck feels like it) and you'll be back to Geo Metro power.

X2 on plasticboobs comment. I think you'd be better off finding a running 360 or dare I say it 401. Heck even a inline 6 would be better than a 305 those were'nt very good power makers.

Welcome to the land of empty pockets and unfinished projects....

X3 on the 305. If yours still has a tranny in it, you will only fit an AMC engine to it. Unless the PO had a Chity in it before. You will have less headaches with the original type set up...

I originally wanted to go the 360 route (since I have rebuilt heads for one) but I couldn't find one that fit in my budget.

Hopefully I can figure something out for the engine.

And it has T15 orig tran.

                Go to the yard!

Go to the local yards. Dig around. Look in their engine pile.

                Do not call, go.

Betcha you can get a 360 for under $250...

Found a 401 in the "pile" for $150!
                Questions?

When you figure in the cost of a Chevy pattern trans, replacing the transfer case or modifying the Chevy TH400 to use the Quadra-Trac you have, buying or fabricating the necessary mounts and linkage, adapting speedo cables and wiring, shortening or lengthing drivelines, all of which has been done before, so theres plenty of helpful information to use, but with all that to consider, maybe a plug-n-play 360 doesn't seem so expensive anymore.
Another option you have is the 304, you lose a little power, and you have to source a flex-plate, but since you are considering a 305...

Don't forget when you are in the wrecking yards to check for fullsize AMC cars, some even came with 401's, rarely, true, but worth a look, at worst you end up a 304 .

Oh, wow. I already love this forum.

Did one craigslist search and found :

360 for $350 and a 401 (came off a '76 Wagoneer) with no price listed but they both run. So that's good.
