    258 carb rebuild kit

I have a new to me 82 wagoner with 258. It hasn't been on the road since 1994. It starts and idles, but wants to stall out when I put in gear.
I'm thinking about buying a carb rebuild kit before starting to adjust everything.

What carb rebuild kit should I buy?
    or
Should I just buy a whole new carb?
    Suggestions appreciated.

Any BBD rebuild kit will work. BIG prob with the BBD carbs are the too small idle passages clog up. There are few web sites that cover drilling out the idle passages if your heart is just set on keeping that never ending problems mixer. Personally I'd toss that carb in the trash and swap in an MC 2100/2150 or Weber carb. Depends on your budget/skills what route you go but NO WAY would I buy another BBD.
    Just my opinion.

Be sure to check the float bowl cover for warpage.

thanks for the reply. Are the motorcraft 2100 & 2150 direct replacement or is there anything else I'll have to do to make it work.
Sorry for the dumb question, but this is my first vehicle with a carb.

The only Carter BBD carbs I'm familiar with came on 318 Chrysler engines...the carbs were ok and simple enough to work on.

I just kitted the Motorcraft 2150 carb on my 1984 J20 with a 360 engine...simple enough to kit however has the high altitude aneroid system and an external vacuum source for the power-valve!(what's up with that?)

I don't think a Motorcraft 2150 will bolt-up where Carter BBD came off...would need an adapter-plate or different manifold

ok, thanks. I'm going to order a complete 2100 conversion kit from ebay.

So long as the owner doesn't try to adjust the altitude compensator, it's a good thing to have. The later 2150's went to external manifold vac to operate the PV. It's all good.

Yeh..the aneroid was hanging open and the power-valve vacuum port was capped-off...

Cross #1 and #6 plugwires to make it backfire a couple times before you mess with it (The BBD that is)
