Hubs .. new units from WARN, the basic lock or Free kind. [ WARN kit/Part number 20990 ]
The WARN "Lock-O-Matics" I took off? For sale if anybody wants them.

First, slide the hub body over the axle shaft, then install the large retaining lock ring on the outside of the hub. There is a groove, you just can't see it!

    [IMG][/IMG]

    [/IMG]

THEN - install the axle shaft snap ring.. it helps to push the axle outward to get at the slot. I did this with a large screwdriver against the u joint.
Then line up and start 2 screws into the hub body, push the end cover down. I added a slight amount of grease to the O ring to ensure it slid into position well and seals. Add the other bolts, snug down. Ready for Calipers!

    [/IMG]

    Done for the day . . .

      And you noticed... no brakes.

Well, seems the re-man folks at NAPA had a slight issue with one of the calipers. It had a smaller banjo bolt. So - I could not get the brakes done. They ordered and I got the correct one today. So let's proceed ...

First, I drained the 38 year old brake fluid from the front circuits. YUK. this is why I hope you all change the brake fluids once in awhile. I couldn't believe how much crud came out of the system. Remember, brake fluid is hydroscopic - ie it absorbs water over time. This results in internal rust to the system.

      [IMG][/IMG]

Now the re-man caliper and pads go on . . .

      [IMG][/IMG]

      [/IMG]

After installing the brake lines, opened up the longest line and added fluid.

      [IMG][/IMG]

Gravity bled most of the air out of the system. Had a buddy come over and pump the brakes for the last bit.. and all good! Pedal is now solid and healthy!

Tomorrow - start the rear drum rebuild . . .

Good to see you begin your next build, but I think this is to easy of a rig to start with for you :P

Someone needs to find you a nice rust bucket with missing interior and a box of mystery parts in the trunk!

          Hmm, well thanks? LOL

Not sure exactly where this one will go or end up. For now, it's the basics and cosmetic stuff. Trust me, it looks a lot better in the pics then in person! Every area needs some attention. In the end, any restoration work takes about the same amount of effort.. it's the amount of money that varies greatly!

            Yesterday's project . . .

Rear brakes. Gathering all the parts I need.. I "think" Notice, decided to replace the rear wheel cylinders as well. The old ones are not leaking, but as nasty as the fluid is, want to start with all new parts. I am sure this may be the last brake job this thing gets ever.

            [IMG][/IMG]

Start the disassembly process.. forgot how DIRTY rear drum brakes are.. driver side lining was on the rivets. Definitely needed to be done.

            [/IMG]

Get all the old stuff removed, take the drums to O'Reilys. Hmm, they say the drums can't be turned? I should have measured them myself.. not sure I am buying that. However, what I apparently am buying is 2 new drums.
I am going to double check the old drums at NAPA next week... the new ones don't have the cooling fins. China re-pops I am sure.

1 can of brake clean, some scrubbing with the small brass brush.. and ready to install parts. Rear drums are like a dynamic puzzle.. try to fit them all together and get the springs hooked up. "Lots-O-Fun" !

            [IMG][/IMG]

The puzzle solved - all parts installed, ready for the drum. Notice, the new rear side pad came pre-rusted? Nice - and it was free! oh well.

            [IMG][/IMG]

New drum installed, light coat of high temp paint.. ready to bleed the brakes. Which we do.. Carl stopped by to help this morning for a bit. He is a local Jeep buddy. Drain all the fluid in the rear circuit, flush with some new fluid.
Pump, bleed, pump, bleed. Pete and repeat until all air is expelled. Have pedal out the wazoo now!
Have proper brakes - with a park brake !

            [IMG][/IMG]

And the refuse box of old, dirty parts ....

            [IMG][/IMG]

This will be fun to watch unfold.

I think we need to start a poll as to when this project crosses the threshold from "driveway build" to "insanity".

Ha Ha MR Krek . . . YOU of all people! LOL I was wondering about your stellar build the other day. I assume it is still in limbo waiting for life to slow down a little and allow you some time to play?

I am pretty sure this one will be a LOT different than Madness. Again, I plan to go slow on this one and keep it reasonable for now. Maybe someday, when time allows, I'll dive into a deeper restoration. But for now, it's a driver for weekend fun and ice cream.

Memorial Day : Today was a day to remember our fallen and my dad... a B 29 pilot who is now watching from above. Thanks to all who have served, and are serving now. God Bless.

So.. not much Jeep work today. I did play around a little bit after family time later in the eve. I took the orbital polisher out, with some heavy cutting compound, and look! It looks like a Maaco commercial! Can you tell which side got some attention? Still needs to be gone over with some finer compound, then get a coat of wax... BUT - I am pleased that I can get some shine out of the paint for now. The cost? elbow grease! I love it . .

I'll take any of the rear brake parts in your "refuse box" shown in post no. 35 that you don't want. You can bring them with you when you look at my selection of bumpers.

I also have a few optional skid plates that you may not have and want.

Hi Dan .. PM me your number so I can come browse.. the rear drum parts are yours for sure... I certainly need a front bumper and headlight buckets.. want them nicer than the one on the Jeep now. It's not damaged, but seems to be slightly "cloudy" ? Weird.. any suggestions? If I could find an NOS grill/headlight buckets I would pop for it!

I need some other small stuff as well.. every time I look stuff over, I find small stuff that needs fixing..

Like the tan dash pad.. and visor mounting buckets... the rear seat bungee and mounting stud.... stuff like that.

Oh - and I desperately need the piece that goes on the bottom of the driver door glass.. can those be bought? The slotted part has rusted off? So the window is not working.. manual window if it matters.

Spending what little extra time I have chasing down some parts... and continue to clean up paint. And finding other issues of course.. like the driver window glass attaching part has rusted off, Now have an inop driver door. Need that part that attaches to the lower glass channel....

Slowly putting together chrome 3 pc bumper sets .. and brackets. Some progress...

                            Rusty Gold !

Found some bumpers and various parts ....

Got a re-chromed rear center pc.. great! And a couple of decent corners... 2 good, 2 just OK for now. Why do some of the bumper corners have a slot in them? 1 has a slot, the other 3 do not? All have a fair bit of rust on the backside....

Also found a decent front center pc. It has some scratches, but will have to do for now. Also got the front brackets.. exactly how does this go together ? Anybody have pictures? My 77 factory manual does not show any assembly pictures, darn it ! Help please? Any suggestions on where to pick up the bumper assembly bolts? Maybe I can use stainless?

If anybody has almost perfect bumper corners like these, or a perfect front center pc, let me know. I am in the market for these parts.

You can see here the areas I have used the chrome polish on . . . cleaning up pretty well, but the scratches through the chrome will not polish out ! LOL

Rain all weekend .. got caught out in the CJ with no top or doors..

So spent some more time with the chrome polish.. overall the bumpers have cleaned up well. You can see the backsides are rusty.... I left one unpolished for ref of what they started as.

So it seems the early end pieces don't have the jack slot.... I need to find one more without the lower slot. I am considering getting these parts re-chromed.. in which case I can use the rear bumpers that are painted black on the rear of the jeep. Have to find out how much this will cost though .... Right now it's elbow grease only.

And the replacement center caps for the wheels showed up. I don't know the wheel brand [ No markings anywhere ], but a local shop was able to get me some center cap parts that will work. Open covers for the hubs, closed ones for the rear.

Also got new lug nuts from NAPA. Again, don't want to spend money for wheels right now, so this is a band aid to make the wheels look acceptable for now. Cost: spray can paint, elbow grease.
