Torqueflight 727 Transmission Poll

Just curious, how many of you have had to rebuild/replace your TF727 in your GW? My '88 vehicle history is somewhat unknown, mileage is high, fluid was clean, this Weds, pan is going to be dropped, new filer and 2nd and reverse bands adjusted - I remain hopeful. First time that I am doing a trans flush, I usually pump it out as I add new ATF until it flushes clean - we shall see. At this time, the 1-2 shift a little flare-ish

228K miles on my 85 Gwag, and I suspect all original.... I did some heavy towing once, pulling another FSJ for about 200miles, the trans got pretty warm... I could feel the heat thru the floor and a snowy day... So I pulled over and waited 30 mins... after that trip I drained and changed the filter, that was 15 years ago... and probably 20Kmiles...

When I said drained, after I replaced the filter and reinstalled the trany pan, I disconnected the trans cooler line and did a total renewal by adding fluid after I would drain about 2 quarts... and did a whole 12 quarts to make sure that the converter had new fresh oil.


Edit a day later: I installed a transmission temp gauge, very effective tool to know what is happening... on a cold 25F day, the fluid will barely go over 95F... even after 50miles... on stop and go traffic on a mild spring day... 150 to 170F.... slipping on sand... it can go to 210F and drop back to 170 withing minutes... it is quite entertaining...

That was good idea no doubt, I have done those style of drains in the past on other vehicles. The one thing I do know about automatic transmissions is keep it clean and keep it cool for longevity.

I have an 89 Grand Wagoneer with a 360 and 727. My 727 had some bad leaks, I had to replace a number of seals. I adjusted the bands and installed a drain on the pan (welded a nut over a drilled hole) while the pan was down. I broke one of the cooling lines while removing the line to replace a seal and had to use a flare coupler to repair it.


My 727 works fine but my mileage is relatively low (96,000). My engine is not putting out full power (needs a timing chain and gears) so I will have a better idea of how well my tranny is working after the engine has a new timing set. It was able to do a very long, steep mountain climb and push through 3 feet of snow in its present condition.
