Half of 1978 came without cats and all of 1979 had cats.
Just luck mine is in the half that did not have one, stock.

A properly running engine won't need one. Jay Leno was being bated by someone about his old cars and how much they pollute, he pointed out that he had a 56 Hudson that will pass todays emission testing without cats or an air pump. My Buell passes 2008 Euro III standards without either one. The condition of your rings and valve seats will have a lot to do with it, and the overlap of your cam.

The built 360 in my J4000 had lower HC emissions than my old 97 Grand Am and the NoX was very close. The guy at the emission place just about freaked when I showed him the results from the two side by side. They weren't going to let me test the J4000 (it is too old to need testing) but I was curious and they weren't busy so they tested it. Like snoopy said, tuning an old engine is the key

interesting. what gets me is all the OBD II vehicles (96-up) are tested her by just pluging in the comptuer. if all the computer's sensors come back as ok, its an automatic pass. they don't even sniff the tailpipe. just because a sensor is giving a green light, doesn't always mean its working how its supposed to.

Here in NW IN, we have emissions testing that do the OBD plug in, but we still get a sniffer test too. I know this because they had a heck of a time trying to get hose over the large, oval pipe ends on the exhaust of my 97 GA.
