    New rear bumper

The square tube bumper on my J10 I wasn't happy with, for several reasons...it wasn't wide enough to comfortably fit a license plate, it was almost too short, providing almost no protection to the bed corner, etc...

So I decided to replace it at the same time I was mounting up my Reese hitch...I debated building one but then I stumbled into a brand new rear step bumper off a 2000 Dodge Dakota...had to do a good bit of mods to it, but I think it came out OK...

I can't decide if I'm nuts about it or not...it's staying as it works and looks better than the other one...

    What do you think?

      Seems just right to me.
      I might go that route.

I think it looks good too. Nice work getting it to fit so well around the corners. However, if it were mine I would try to alter/ hide or remove the chrome inlays. IMO that kind of takes away from the look. Just my 2 cents.

            fits nice and looks good...

not that j-10s are as wide as the normal full-size truck, but that shows how big the mid-size dodge dakotas are. I think newer dodge trucks are way over sized.

yeah the Dakota is very similar in dimensions to our rigs...

I did all the trim work on the top with sawzall/scroll saw. Fabbing up the mounting brackets wasn't much of a chore...probably spent 4 hours start to finish on it.

do you have any pictures of the mounts that you had to fabricate?
This looks like a good option for our J-trucks.

I can take a couple...wasn't a lot to it. They bolt to the existing frame same as the stock bumper does...H plate to go around the frame end cap, then heavy angle (1/4 X3X3) used as the 'scab'...welded to the bottom plate of the bumper, and along side the H plate. Anyone with a torch/welder/chop saw and a little know how can get there.

                      That's pretty slick!

I still have no idea what I'm using for bumpers on the SuperChief, I'm addign that idea to the mix.

I lik eit. It really looks like it belongs on there.

This would be a great mod for an 80's truck, since that style bumper (plastic steps) first started showing up in the 80's, it looks stock.

looks real good to me--except for the chrome, of course that could come off. how would you rate the hitch receiver?

Rate it? It's a standard Reese hitch that I fabbed up to work on the Jeep...no idea what it's for originally, I just added some real heavy brackets to it and bolted it on....it'd have to tear the frame apart to come loose. It's up as high as I could put it...almost a hidden hitch as is right now.

Honestly, it looks like you did an awesome job making it fit, it definitely looks like it belongs on there, but I dont really like the look of it. My personal taste though, I dont like any generic looking bumpers on the Js. The factory ones are good, but I really like all the custom ones people come up with. Maybe post a couple shots of the entire truck to see how it looks "overall". Perhaps the closeups just dont do it justice...
