    77 Cherokee S Project Begins

Well after tons of searching I finally brought home a FSJ. 1977 Cherokee S 360 T18 etc. The ride home (almost 2 hours) went good with only 1 hiccup. If I downshift into 3rd wrong it kicked the transfer case out of 2h to a neutral position. Happened just as I got home, any thoughts?

I'm getting a parts list together and getting it cleaned up today, should be a fun project with lots of questions.

The green jeep and kayaks are mine too, very empty pockets

The bad side, the real bodywork will be in the rear flares. Needs a hosing off too.

Very nice Jeep, I like having a jeep now that has body panels and is made of metal that is worth repairing.

Looks like I am ordering all new window seals, is there any trick to getting the tailgate down?

whats happend with the tailgate? do you have the switch in dashboard and and the keyswitch at the tailgate?
If it is out of order are a lot of things to check. take the search function here or tell what is the problem.

Yes the switch in the dashboard rolls the window up and down the switch in the tailgate did not. I cannot seem to get any of the 4 keys I have into the cylinder all the way. And the handle moves ok for the tailgate but it seems like everything is just dry/sticky once I get it to open I think it will be easy enough to clean up and smooth out.

if you disasemble the rear taiglgate lock, you see that there is a steel square which is fixed in a aluminium cast. this square with the cast is the connection to the mechanism of the switch. the cast part is mostly broken, so you can turn left and right with they key and nothing happens
it needs some minutes to disasemble this from outside, to see if this is the worm

the part i mean is this one https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/phot...eat=directlink

i glued them with special steel glue.

                try it.

I got the tailgate down it was just sticky from sitting. Time for a good cleaning and getting some trim pieces on order.

Was there a western package? I found a badge in the glovebox, that would explain all the leather like trim.

I don't know about the Western package. I suspect it was a regional dealer thing.

Do you have a garage? I hope you don't have to work on it in the parking lot.

That thing is rad! I totally dig the paint scheme. Folks were serious!

Good luck, dedicate some evenings to ready through Strode82's and CJ5's, and WSHII's builds among countless others.. Most of what your going to run into will be covered in detail and save you the hassel of posting and waiting.. Just bookmark the technical stuff and start taking stuff apart..

Glad to have another Cherokee in the house!

Thanks, it came from CA somewhere, according to the guy I bought it from the previous owner had a paint shop and did the paint job. All the panels and carpet had been torn out, I have the panels but I'm going to ditch them for ABS. Headliner matches the doors as well as the dash.

Mechanically it's very sound, engine was rebuilt a couple of years ago. I have probably put over 100 miles on it now since I bought it, all the way up to 60 mph. Other than the T18 being hard to find the right gears, its all tight. I haven't been able to get it on dirt yet to try the 4x4.

Incredibly clean for a jeep this old around here. About to order all the door and window seals from BJs. 90% of the work will be done out there, no garage. But I have garage access for the big stuff.

Has anyone replaced the roof rack fittings with bolts and fender washers? Think that would hold 2 kayaks?

I hauled 2 ocean kayaks on my GW roof rack for a couple years after replacing all the well nuts with original type.
