Man, I hate it when people ask these questions, but I gotta do it. My uncle (who lives about 16 hours away) told me I could have his 1974 J10. All we know is that it is a straight 6, manual trans, 4wd, and I know they have front and rear d44's. But my questions are as follows...
What transmission?
What size engine?
What t-case?
What is the spring pad width on these suckers?
And also, the carb has a crack in it. What carbs are ya'll running? I need good off-camber carb, for rock crawling. Thanks guys.

Hey, 258 six, t14a 3spd., d20t/c, d44 fr.& rr. w/t axles(4 whl. drum brakes open knuckle fr.)4.09 gears. Should be a Carter single on it, they are actually pretty good carbs, look for a replacement=cheap! Free is the best Jeep, good luck!

Some early '74's may have disks...Like any other change over year.
With AMC, I'm sure they were trying to use up all the older parts so who knows?

Discs were only standard on the Wagoneer and J-20; they were optional on the Cherokee and J-10 through '76 or '77. So it could have either, depending on how it was ordered.

OK, sweet. Are there any fuel injection kits out there for the 258 I-6?

There are several FI options for this motor. Probably the most common and least expensive is to get a 4.0L head & FI setup out of a YJ and swap with your 4.2L head. Requires a couple minor mods but tons of us CJ baby Jeepers have done it.
There are lots of writeups out there, I'll search for a couple good ones if you want.

Yeah, if it's a 3-speed, T15 definitely. The optional 4-speed is the T18, with a 6.32:1 1st gear. Not sure about the rear axle ratio - could be 3.54 or 4.09. I know that the 4.09 ratio was optional in '77.

Wasn't it a 232 in '74? The 3.8L precursor to the 258?

The changeover from 232 to 258 in FSJs was in 1971. The 232 was produced in '74, but only went into the CJs and Commandos.
Displacements went from 199/232 ("Rambler" engines) to 232/258 ("AMC" engines) in '71. The deck height, connecting rods, and bellhousing pattern were the biggest changes.

Would this work with all 4.0L equipped vehicles or just the YJ? There are tons of XJ's at the yards, but no YJ's.

The same FI is/was available from Chrysler as a kit. The main difference (between the kit and what you'd find on a Jeep) was a crankshaft sensor mounted on the harmonic damper. This allowed the buyer to install without modifying the flywheel (and pulling the engine or transmission).
I believe any 4.0L is ok, although it'd be easier for you to swap from a manual transmission, since you need to adapt the crankshaft sensor on the flywheel. You'd still need to fab the mount for the sensor on the bellhousing, or buy an aftermarket bellhousing with the sensor mount present.
I think you're better off with a complete donor vehicle, since there are a lot of pieces you need. Lots of information is available on the web. Not a trivial project though - you need to have some saavy to make all the pieces work together as they should.
