Every one of these that I have ever owned has been filled with Gear Lube from the PO.
I have heard that running gear lube instead of atf will not harm the unit but will make the pump work harder,
I have also heard some stories that after changing back to atf the 208 develops leaks and noise, Is this true?
The 208 in my 80 j10 is running gear lube from the PO, I just don't feel right the the fluid is incorrect and would like a little advise and peace of mind. BTW there is a small leak at this time from the rear output shaft seal, would the detergent in the atf open this up?
thanks
Lou
PS I do have a NP 229 that also had lube in it, changed it to atf and I have had to replace the output seal w/ a speedy sleeve, no problems since with that one
