Anyone know any good "local" camp spots in Big Sur?

My son REALLY wants to camp near Big Sur for his senior trip but most of the camp sites are either sold out, $90+ a night for a dirt spot, or a fire road (which we hear are all closed from fires).

Anyone know a good spot up there?

I used to hike/ backpack botchers gap area but that was 20 years ago and dont know what its like now. Used to be you could go from there to Tassajara and hitch hike back out.
