Vin question

Was decoding the vin on my most recent truck purchase and the source I used says digits 4 and 5 are as follow.

26- Truck- (Export Only), 119" Wheelbase

Does that mean this truck was meant to be sold outside of the US?

Not familiar with the 4/5 digits 26 on the pre 73's but yeah "export only" means just that. Generally refers to righthand drive trucks intended for UK/OZ/Japan etc. They do show up in the US occasionally. Some were intended/sold for USPS rural deliveries. Some were brought to the US via retired military.

Red face

It's a left hand drive truck. Another thing that doesn't add up assuming I'm reading it correctly or should be a 4 barrel 360 but it has a 2 barrel on it.

Vin is J3A262XP24856

I was going off memory when I update my sig but the truck is a 73.

Yeah according to the VIN it's a 73 built in Toledo with AT/LHD for export. It came off the assembly line with a 4v 360 but it's 46 years old and one can only imagine what all has been swapped/changed by previous owners in 46 years.

Wouldn't surprise me with how hacked up this truck is. Here's the mess I'm working with.

Do you have a body lift? That engine looks really low...

Looking at your throttle cable bracket, it looks like it is bent up at the EGR (I didn't think 73 had EGR so that alone may indicate engine swap?). On my 401 when I went from 4bbl to 2bbl (don't ask why, long story), I had to move the bracket and it interfered with the EGR in that same place. That also may be an engine swap indication.

I'm with Wiley-Moe, I bet it was originally a Canadian truck.

I dont recall seeing a body lift, however it's not something I've actively looked for either. I do plan to install one though like I had on my 67. Are there any castings that would help identify what year the motor is?

Unless you have the stock valve covers it won't apply to you but the 360's came with the build code stamped on a metal tag attached to the right valve cover.

Ah yea that is long gone. I'll just have to swap a 4 barrel intake and carb on so it matches my vin Haha. I plan to pull the motor, trans and tcase out this spring to rebuild the trans and tcase and put in new gaskets on the motor. Assuming the compression test is healthy.

Funny you mention that; In California, if a smoggable truck had a 4bbl from the factory and you went to smog it with a 2bbl on there, you would fail! Makes a little bit less than no sense.

Luckily we're exempt here after so many years and in 2020 emissions testing all together is going away in my county.
