    208 & 229

ok,i think ive found a 208 t-case with in a decent distance from my home, the question (kinda) is this...isnt the only difference between the 208 & the 229 is that the 229 has 2wd,4lo
,4hi with fulltime 4wd & the 208 has 2wd,4lo &4hi without fulltime 4wd? if i remember right the 208 will bolt right up wont it? thanks in advance,

you'll need a longer rear driveshaft with the 208.

It does bolt right up with the exception of the driveshafts. I believe the front will work but you'll need a longer rear shaft. It does use the same shifter and linkage as the 229.

Easy way is to get the one from the donor rig, in your case from a 208 equiped Wag or Chero.
One from a 70's QT equiped Wag/Chero will also work.
Truck versions are too long but it's cheaper to shorten a shaft than it is to lengthen.
They use 1310 u-joints on both ends so the potential exists to find something similar in a parts yard too.

IF it is a V8/727/208. The 6 bangers and V8s with manual tranny were different.

since the drive shaft is covered I'll point out the difference in the cases. The 208 is locked so to speak sending 50% of the power to the rear & 50% of the power to the rear. The 229 has the viscious coupler which acts like a limited slip & transfers power front to back in 4hi but is "locked" in 4lo. The 208 will operate off the flag shifter or the floor shifter if you go that way & the 229 will use vacuum to go from 2wd to 4wd & the flag to go from 4wdhi to 4wdlo. Hope this makes since.

so does the 208 NOT hav hi & lo when in 4wd? it just splits the power 50/50?

                          The 208 has a 2HI, 4HI and 4LO.

The 2HI is rear wheel drive. The front free spins.

The 4HI is part time and locks the front and rear together for a 50/50 split

The 4LO is also part time with the 50/50 split and low range

                          There's also a neutral between 4HI and 4LO.

Do you get that the 229 has
                              2wd same
4hi Viscous coupler power does not automaticly split 50/50 front to rear
4lo locked power is split 50/50 front to rear
