    Two-fold smog question

First, I did the entire ignition upgrade to include the MSD 6AL (after my last smog check). I'm very pleased with it. Does anyone know if the timing degrees need to change since the install? I failed smog today (love California), and I was told that my degrees were WAY off.

Second, I have some numbers of my gross polluter and I would like to know where to start. I have a 2-week-old catalytic converter on and a new EGR valve. Here are the numbers:

    HC PPM
    Max. Meas.
    15MPH - 115 234
    25MPH - 95 230

    CO%
    15MPH - 0.63 4.05
    25MPH - 0.82 3.85

I was also told that my 6 month old locking gas cap leaks. Lame.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

sorry, that was cold, but i really can't believe all the emissions hoops you all have to jump thru. Sheesh, i run a d**ned tractor motor staight piped in my jeep all day with no problem. Cats go in the steel pile.

Yeah, I agree. CA has the toughest emissions laws in the nation. I bought a catalytic converter and there are two types...California, and all others. Lame.

You didn't post all your numbers?

Have you ever done a compression test?

Well, I only wrote down the highlighted numbers. I'll post the others in a couple of hours. What should my compression be?
            Thanks.

120-160psi is normal, shouldn't be more than 30 psi different between adjoining cylinders.

this is from memory, anyone: is this correct?

Ken - when mine has failed that bad, it's always been the power valve. Check the vacuum line and pull the line off of the nipple on the carb to see if any gas runs out - none should.

I have a gas cap I use just for the test. I have a drilled one I normally use to help with vapor lock with our desert adventures.

I know we have to put up with smogging these things here in CA, but it's 8pm here the week before Christmas and I was just out messing with the Jeep in a t-shirt, levi's and bare feet. We even have the windows open in the house. There's always pluses and minuses wherever you are.

Thanks for the California cohesiveness. Is the power valve on the front of the carb with a large vacuum line on it? It looked a little spongy. I don't know where it is. I was in the process of replacing all the vacuum lines but I wanted to get a test, pass or fail, so I could get a temp slip from DMV to drive it again, since I expired last month. I only got some of the lines replaced.

Yeah, I plan to wear shorts Christmas day. I do every year even if the temperature drops way down, like to 65 degrees. LOL

ok, i've been seeing my breath every day since september. But, i must say there is nothing better than a 55 degree Lake Superior (largest freshwater lake in the world, by surface area) when it's 90 degrees in august. especially when juming off 25 foot bedrock cliffs.

                          but alas...
