    timing question

I set my timing today at idle and got it dialed in great pulls 21 in of vac at idle, BUT if I hold the engine at a steady rpm above about 1500 rpm it studders and sputters. then if I adjust the timing to run good above idle it runs like crap at idle and pulls like 15 in of vac. what do i do? i have the vac advance hooked up to the spark port of the carb with no CTO hooked up. should i hook it up to manifold vac and set the timing at idle so that when the engine is above ilde it retards the timing?

another thing. with the timing adjusted where it is running good at idle i checked the timing with a light and its way off the scale.

    Hey there!

You are adjusting timing via the vacuum gage With the vacuum advance to manifold DISCONECTED AND PLUGGED, right??

im neutral and at 750 rpm at idle there is no vac going to the advance so I didnt see a reason to unhook it.

i drove today and it doesent do it on the road it only does it when under no load.

you should have the vacuum advance hooked up to a port where the vaccum changes with the throttle plates open and close. do you have it hooked up like that?

I have the vac hooked up to the spark port where it gets vac just above idle.it seems that the vac advance advances it too far and it runs like crap. but if I retard it so it runs alright it runs like crap at idle.

Where are you connecting your vac. gauge?

I don't know. I have not tried that method. I assume it was running correctly before you started (or close to correctly). I would retime it with a light and try again.
