    Carb Bowl Vent Solenoid

Thinking bout using this in place of the carb bowl vent solenoid:

The 410 Piston Check Valve incorporates a piston with an embedded o-ring that seals on the seat. Pressure in the flow direction moves the...

I'm thinking install it backwards so the direction of flow runs toward the carb, not toward the canister. With a 1 PSI cracking pressure, I think it would allow fumes to escape as desired when desired, but it would seat and effectively close the vent with the engine running.

No emissions inspections in my area. Just like trying to make things work.

    Thoughts?

It needs to vent freely when not running and be closed when running. From what I have read, if you can't find a replacement, it is just best to plug the vent to the charcoal canister. The carburetor will continue to vent inside the air cleaner; it just won't be captured by the charcoal canister.

Do you think the vent pressure would exceed 1 PSI?

No. The bowl vents are always open to the air horn (top area of the carburetor, inside the air cleaner). When running, the solenoid valve is closed and the bowl vents are active. When the engine is off, the cold air door comes down to block the air cleaner snorkel, and the solenoid valve opens. The canister is now a less restrictive path for the vapors to vent, but no way is the air cleaner door going to seal enough to hold 1 psi of vapor pressure.

I think TW's advice is good - just block it and leave it in place if you need to retain factory appearance. If you worry, you could block open the cold air slightly and let the vapors from the bowl vents freely vent through the cold air intake.

Still available on eBay -- $20-40. Just search "bowl vent solenoid" and several Motorcraft pieces come up.

I bought a few of them. Unfortunately they're all the wrong thing. They're advterised as "vent" solenoids, but they're actually"purge" solenoids... normally closed, energized open. The one on the bowl needs to be normally open, energized closed.

I found one that should work. Napa carries a vent solenoid and wiring pigtail for a mid-2000s Chevy truck whick is normally open and energized closed. Picking it up tonight.

Cool! If it works, please share the part number and Napa name/number! Good luck.

                    Here it is:

It's large, but it works. The fittings are the same OD as the stock vent hose. I made coupling sleeves out of some larger diameter hose and snugged it all up with hose clamps. That's just what I had laying around. I'm sure it could be adapted better with a bit of glue and some plastic vacuum connectors.

The wiring pigtail is EC848. These are late '90s through I think 2010 Chevy/GMC parts, so I imagine they'll remain available for the foreseeable future.
