Useable TBI swap parts??

Hey all! I've decided to go the DIY TBI upgrade route. I've done lots of reading and I believe I have a good handle on what I'm doing. As a kid my Dad had countless 4.3 Astros & Safari Vans, and that's were my car knowledge began to grow. I can Identify most TBI parts and understand each part function in the system.

But I do have some questions...

PARTS: I have a Yard Ornament 91' S10 2.8l 5speed....I think I can use the Harness, Sensors, Fuel Pump, and Tank from that truck...Is this true?

I have a 4.3L TBI and I plan on using that TBI Manifold and sourcing 5.7L Injectors to install in the TBI.

Also...I cant use the 2.8L ECM, so I will again buy a new ECM. Will a stock 7747 ECM start and be drivable without a Chip or any Mods? Or, have I totally overlooked some small details about the firing order being totally different?..

NEXT Q's...... Can I run a TFI Coil Upgrade with the GM TBI? I don't plan to run a Knock Sensor or the VSS. Just wanna run the motor so to speak, and I like a Ford TFI upgrade.

I cant swear to it, but I think the 2.8 ECM will work with a different chip, someone will correct me if I'm wrong...

If your using an AMC engine, the manifold will not work, you will need to get an adapter plate for the TB to mount to a 2bbl manifold. Thats what I did.

The 7747 computer will fire, as long as its from a V8. You can send your 2.8 ECM in and have the chip changed for a socket for swapping chips. Then you can swap in a usable program.

Yes, the TFI upgrade works well with the ECM. I have also made the one wire HEI dizzys work with it.

Ahh...Thank You! I didn't think I could make use of the ECM from that truck...that will work out well!

As far as the Adapter plate.. I'm gonna make one.

Looks like I'm covered on Parts.... Now have to do some more reading up on the programming end of this swap...

I dont mean to hijack this thread, but how does one go about making a 1 wire HEI work with a DIY TBI system? I've been interested in building a TBI setup for my truck, and this is one of the things I've been worried about.

Depends on what you want. The 1-wire HEI does not give you spark advance control, so you can't do that. You could maybe convert the 1-wire distributor to use the large 7-pin module - then you could use the ECM to control spark advance. http://www.megamanual.com/ms2/GM_7pinHEI.htm But you'll have more than one wire.

If you want, you can just do TBI for fuel control. Then yopu don't need any connections to the distributor. The Howell systems are like this.

You'd be better off grabbing a harness and ECM from a 4.3/305/350.

The 2.8 harness will probably be too short and require lengthening of some wires for the sensors.

I spent ~$110 @ the local yard for a complete system.
Everything the whole system.

In my case, the caddy was HEI from the start, I added a 454 TBI and harness. I made jumper wires to replace the internal modual, spliced the wires to the cap and ran them back to the firewall, where I mounted the GM 8 pin on an Aluminum heat sink. Has been running flawlessly for over a year and a half. I can get you details if you need them.

I'd be interested in hearing about it Jaber. Maybe you have a thread? Like Will said, don't want to hijack this thread.

No harm in starting another thread. Maybe Tad can split this one into a new thread for you. Or Jeff can put your info into a new thread with an appropriate title.

<<This guy is Will.

I'd be very interested in seeing that Caddy HEI modification. I know a lot of members here have HEI's, who knows who could use this info. Though I would suggest starting another thread, to prevent further derailment.

It is easy and I have already detailed how it is done. I did this on my last rig. (Converted the one wire to work with the TBI system) Check this thread below. Read through it to the part where I begin to modify the distributor and you will find it.) If you need any other information just ask. I can give you finite detail on doing this conversion.
