Transfer case Exploded!

A friend of mine bought an '84 Wagoneer and the transfer case chain came part and exploded the case. His mechanic replaced that t-case with another then brought it to me to get the vacuum system working and adjust the shift linkages. I got the vacuum motor working perfectly then started in on the linkage adjustments. I could only get 2wd and 4 low. 4 hi would never catch fully. I adjusted the flag shifter a few times then start the engine and see what happened. The last time I put it in gear which was still not engaging, I killed the engine, and got out of the truck to find transmission fluid running everywhere. I got underneath and the top of the t-case, right above the front output shaft was blown out. I can almost stick my finger inside the case. The t-case still goes into gear in 2wd or 4low so I was able to move the truck so I could clean up the trans fluid from the concrete so I'm assuming the chain didn't come apart. I don't know what in the world happened. The shifter internals are right in the area were the case is busted but I'm still baffled. My friend, who owns this Wagoneer, brother has an '82 Wagoneer with a 258 and a manual transmission. I believe the t-case in it is a 208 but I'm not sure. Will that t-case from a 6 cylinder/manual transmission bolt up to a 360 with a 727? FSJ t-cases are few and far between here. And if anyone has a clue at what might have happened to the current t-case, I'd like to here theories.

O'yeah, as I was adjusting the shifter and then testing the adjustment, I never moved more than a foot forward or backward. I would shift from 2wd, 4hi, and 4low each time I tested each adjustment.

Sounds like there may have been something loose inside or the case came from a wreck.
