401 with 2 barrel carb?

Another question from a new guy. I talked to someone about buying a Cherokee with a 401, and he said it had a 2 barrel carb. Is there such a beast? And what can anybody tell me about it?

Not from Jeep, AFAIK. There were some IHC trucks with 2V AMC 401s. It would be easy to fit a 2V manifold from a 304 or 360 and run a 2V, however.

CA again....
Certain years if you wanted a 401 in CA it was factory equipped 2bbl.

Better look at the block casting before you buy.

Indeed. VIN and stickers may say 401 but the block says 360. That would explain the 2V.

Back in the days when they were new, there were problems with the 4-barrel Motorcraft that some dealers could not deal with.
The fix was to put on a 2-barrel manifold and 2100 carburetor.
I have been running a 2100 on the 401 for 10 years. Works for me.

With the 2 barrel it's ok for torque at low rpm, but you should have a lack of power at high rpm

I've got a 401 with a 2V waiting for me to rebuild it...came out of a J truck. No idea if it's stock or not but why the heck would someone take OFF a 4V and ADD a 2V?? So I assume it's from the factory that way...

Maybe they expect an improvment for mileage or emissions , but it's indeed a pity to reduce the perfs of a 401..
