so I'm ticked about exhaust...

hey guys...

I'm upset about exhaust, there are no parts to replace the crossover y pipe on my 76 401. I have (semi) decided to build my own. The PO put true duals on without a crossover and it's pretty much shot. I'd like to put in a smooth mandrel bent system that is pretty quiet. I do have factory manifolds which I'm keeping since they look like they flow pretty well. I want to do a single exhaust out the back, my 401 has a stock cam but is EFI, I'm thinking 2.5" output will be fine, 2" from manifold to the Y should work. Then, I have a 4" lift so factory or BJ's stuff doesn't work!

Soooooo.... I'm going to build my own I think I'll get a universal kit from summit, I need input on muffler, maybe double in single out, that would eliminate y pipe, also, thinking of linking up behind the transfer case...

any part numbers or insight would be appreciated! especially mufflers, I do want quiet...

thanks guys!

I built mine several years ago. Instead of running the cross over under the rear corner of engine and the tranny. I ran it around the front of the engine and "Y" it into the pipe on the other side. That way I could drop the engine
or tranny pan without pulling the cross over pipe if I needed to. I got my stock muffler from e-bay, I like quite also.

I went with a Summit kit and welded it up myself. I ran duals through a dual in/dual out Thrush welded muffler. The driver side crosses just behind the transfer case. I don't think the Thrush muffler is the quietest, but it does have a nice hot rod rumble...

I made my system, the Y pipe crosses over right in front of the trans crossmember, I kept the bottom of the pipe flush with the bottom of the crossmember. I put a flowmaster Y junction right next to the transfer case and ran 3" with a turndown at the rear bumper. its all tucked up above the frame front to back to prevent damage. I made it to clear everything before the lift, and with the quadratrac in place is it was really tight.

I have true duals (rotting) right now that exit in front of the rear tire, want to shoot the exhaust out the rear due to fumes in the cab with windows open. With the placement of the fuel tank it just seems simpler to run a single exhaust out the rear, it's proving more complicated though!

I need some Stock OEM Exhausts Jeep Guys

I have not been around much on the board, but I have made multiple requests to members to send me your rusty, rotten STOCK OEM FSJ exhaust -- and I will reproduce it and send you one for for FREE.

Otherwise send me a cut up, rusty OEM exhaust - Y pipe, interm pipe, muffler and tailpipe

Or Just a Y pipe

And I will make it and send you a new one for free.

We make these 1200 + a year for vintage Mustangs, Torino's, Fairlanes and now Bronco's -- yes Bronco's.

I made (1) request on the classicbronco web site for a friend and immediately got 5-6 exhausts shipped to me -- and now we have several real OEM reproductions for the 66-77 Bronco's...

So Jeep Friends --- come on help me out here and get me some exhausts.

Interested in doing Stock systems to start with and use my truck w. AMC 401 to make some performance systems - for the 360's and 401's. We can do turbo and peformance mufflers as well as increase the pipe diameter and connect to stock manifolds for those that have engine upgrades.

Can also do some systems for headers - but all headers are different. Can do Hooker AMC 360 & 401 Today.

My List - Wanted Stock OEM exhausts

Y Pipes or Complete Systems

230 cu in (3.8 L) Tornado I6
232 cu in (3.8 L) AMC I6
258 cu in (4.2 L) AMC I6
327 cu in (5.4 L) AMC Vigilante V8
350 cu in (5.7 L) Buick Dauntless V8
360 cu in (5.9 L) AMC V8
401 cu in (6.6 L) AMC V8

So send me a pm or email if you can help or want a free exhaust.

You could have a custom one made, too. I had one done for a previous Jeep of mine and it was a work of art! Well worth the $$$, IMHO. And the steel clamps made dis-assembly a breeze which made access to the motor extremely easy.

Somebody close by should have some parts cars or a rusty OEM one that needs replacement.

Also need a set of AMC 401 & 360 w. heat riser/spacer -- stock manifolds to fit some up to my car...

Anybody?

Pretty sure Walker still makes the 2 piece y-pipe for older rigs.
They showed it last year when I was looking @ exhaust for dad's old '79.

from Walker's website, the oldest they have is for a 79, are the 76 and 79 axle positioning the same and are the manifolds the same? Also, it's for the 360 and mine is the 401 but I think they are set up the same as well.
