Long time FSJ owner, member and Mountain Pass Collector...Don S. May he RIP

It is with deep sorrow and remembrance that I post this in regards to Don S

This Full Size Jeeper was monumental in my beginning stages of Jeepin and Colorado trail driving exploration. The stories he told of all the 161 mountain passes, jeep jamborees, and Ouray Invasions and the trials that came with those adventures were inspiring.

I am sure that he has also reached, inspired, gave advice and sustained many new comers and current jeepers in this community format.

I will recall one such story that sticks out from most. It happened near highway 550 coming off Engineers Pass.
Apparently, Don S couldn't get their FSJ restarted and had to "dead stick it" from Poughkeepsie down to highway 550. Although he used the term deadstick they were in a Automatic. Needless to say, those that have been that route can see the adrenaline and frustration that route could have caused. Many of places that need a significant boost to get over to travel downhill.

I received a phone call this morning from his wife, Doris that Don passed away last Wednesday 02/05/2020.

Please pray for his wife Doris and the Shrepel family.

I ask that we see ourselves as scripture in James 4:14

Whereas you dont know what your life will be like tomorrow. For what is your life? For you are a vapor, that appears for a little time, and then vanishes away.

Here's to the self proclaimed Geriatric Doctor of FSJ's!

And the last post that he posted of many that he helped and answered...

http://www.ifsja.org/forums/vb/showthread.php?t=188191

Out standing!

****, that's a punch in the gut. That guy deserves the utmost respect. Never met him, or even seen what he looks like, but he was one of the first people to help me when I signed up. His great personality and anecdotes really made an impression on me over the years. Really the type of guy that makes you want to be a better human being.

Luckily, he wisdom will continue to help people for many decades to come. Please let his grandchildren and great grandchildren know that there are also a bunch of random people on the internet whose lives he made a difference in!

Any link to an obit or tribute page?

Don S. always a helpful and most of all, nice guy. I didn't know him but he reminded me of a retired military guy. The great thing we have from him is that his FSJ knowledge and stories are spread out in this forum. RIP.

Thank you Rstep for posting this on FSj site.
The last time I saw Don, BlackBart and I were trying to set up the big tent that belonged to my brother, Don walked up with his chair and sat down and offered us all kinds of suggestions that weren't really that helpful (Thank god for trees and bungy cords or we would have never got that thing up).
His campfire stories were some of the best about all the passes he had done, his first run as a stoker on a locomotive that was almost his last, because he had gone to sleep in the caboose, and they didn't find him till the last minute. Making CW contacts mobile using a micro switch on the gear shift as a key.

Vaya Con Dios our friend!

Ah man! a big blow to the IFSJA community. I loved seeing him post up here; his wit and class was very apparent. To know that his last post on here was thanking my daughter for her service makes it that much more bitter sweet.

God bless you, Don S. Thank you for the time you gave us, here. Praying for your family in this time. You'll be missed.

Thanks for posting.

I think he was a part of the email list that evolved into this forum.
Someone will know if that's correct.

I met Bob in Ouray. And he would continue to drop by during the invasion even after he wasn't doing the trails anymore.

He was awesome as so was his wife Doris.

He was friendly to everyone and only had nice things to say. A legend in the community. We will miss you Don!

Any of us old enough to remember that list (ahem - speaking for self only here) may not be able to remember that far back. I've had like three lifetimes of stuff happen since way back then, but...

Don will be missed, but as others have said, his posted input and personal interactions have made positive impacts on many of us that will carry on.

2002

Been a long time since 2002...or for some of us 1998....anyway. For those who have passed,,,life is easier now. For those they left...although hard...it will be better....

Much appreciation to those who have built this group,,,and more of the same who come along.
