Project Mismatch - 1984 Jeep J20

Hello everyone. Registered a long time ago to learn and watch as I waited to find a FSJ that I wanted. That time has come.

I found a 1984 J20 sitting behind a shed and a J10 surrounded by weeds in the field. Talked to the owner, handed him $800 cash and he delivered them to my house.

I call the J20 mismatch because it has a peculiar set of features. Title, door sticker and cab vin all come back to 1984, but the truck has a brow and it is either a really good roof replacement or a cab was changed at some point.

77K miles, NP208 / 360 Truck. Rusty body. Real rust, not that surface imperfection you guys call rust out west

Goals for this project:

1)Completely restored drivetrain and frame.
2) Fuel Injection
3) Flatbed
4) 33" tires

I'll put the rusty cab back on at that point and drive it for awhile. I hope to find a replacement cab to work on during that time and have ready to swap onto this newly restored everything else in a couple years.

This project isn't going to win any awards. It'll be my hunting, fishing, taking the dog out to BFE kind of truck. But I also want it to be my last truck. New ones are expensive.

Found it behind the shed

J10 Came home too

Usually pulling the door jamb sticker leaves a sign by way of bars showing it has been removed and reapplied.
Muscle grill says both are 80's vintage. The 208 says the same thing. Might look under the rug or from the underside to see if they're grafted in the the transfer case hump. For that price for the pair you must have worn a mask and carried a shootin iron
My guess would be a roof replacement from an earlier cab, or they found an early cab in the parts room and stuck it on as it went down the line. IIRC The last of the brows were in 80, but might be wrong.

Getting some work done. Removed the bed, washed the frame really good and started stripping everything off of the back half. Also had to cut out the center cross member because it was rotted real good in the corner. I will make a new one.

Next step is hang new fuel tank in rear, build new cross member and fix some rust through spots in the front spring hangers. Both left and right side are thiiinnnn.

On the driver side of the frame rail there should also be the last few digits in the VIN stamped on. It should be forward of the rear hanger and aft of the shock mount.
