Tailgate wiring splice

My vehicle is a 1969 Wagoneer. While replacing the damaged trailer hitch wiring, I came across a splice the p.o. did that I can't seem to figure out. The p.o. spliced a 16 ga wire into the red/white stripe 14 or 12 ga wire that goes into the tailgate. The 16 ga wire he spliced in ran for about 3 feet where he split that wire into two wires and ran them along the left side frame to the dash cluster area where they weren't attached to anything. I do have a 1971 Wagoneer wiring diagram, no mention of the tailgate wiring. All of my rear end lighting works and so does the rear window, slowly but it works.

So I guess I have two questions. First, what does the red/white stripe wire run? Second, any ideas what the splice could have been for, the one that split into two and run forward to the dash area?

Hi - I can't trace it through for you right now, but you may be helped by looking at the '73 diagram on the Tom Collins site. A '73 has a fuse panel, but I would expect the wiring to the back half of the car to be pretty much unchanged.

My other suggestion would be to trace back the wire in question to its origin, and infer it's purpose from that.

Thanks Tim, I did look at those charts and finally got a chance to get at this. It was the red wire not the red/white stripe. I followed it to the switch and found it to be the power wire to the tailgate. The spliced in wire must have been for a switch that is now long gone.
The p.o. did have all three of the trailer wires spliced in to the wrong wires. Probably confused the drivers following him. Works like it should now.
