I'm puttin my new/used steering knuckle back on, I know the outer part is supposed to be filled with some type of lubricant, is it gear oil or bearing grease? For now I used grease and packed it around where the knuckle rotates so as to keep the seal and all lubricated.

According to a post on the m715 zone regarding the same question:
Dana says to use SAE 140 gear oil, the military manuals say to use grease. Personally, I use the gear oil. Some people use a mixture of gear oil and grease, which is probably the best compromise between adequate lubrication and reduced leakage
I personally pack the inside with grease first, and then apply oil.Check out Sore4x4.com for a 4x4 site local to SW Washington/Oregon!

Thanks for the replies, I'm gonna stick with the grease for now ( no pun intended) I figure a little gear oil will work its way in there anyway.73 j-4000 "buttercup"-SOA 36's 4 door cab

Yeah you're correct Heep. The earlier Kaiser era D27/44's did call for grease but in the AMC era by 72 at least they changed the lube specs to 140w gear lube in the knuckles.Check out Sore4x4.com for a 4x4 site local to SW Washington/Oregon!

Isn't straight 140 pretty much grease, anyway? Not looking forward to closed knuckles, but am looking at www.sunrayengineering.com at these axles.

I use about 2/3 grease (JT-6 red) and 1/3 gear oil. This mixture has been working fine since the mid 60's when I got my first Jeep with closed knuckles.
