What causes a oil filter to leak?

I have been chasing down leaks on Lilly,

The oil filter seal was leaking and the oil filter had been screwed on soooo tight it took all i could do to get it off.

I inspected the seal and surface on the new filter WIX and could not find any irregularity. I cleaned off the site and installed the new filter

Yet again the seal seaps and actually leaks!

You sure it is not the pump leaking then running down onto the filter? I have seen filters leak at the crimp between the base and the housing, but not two in a row. I would look higher up for the source.

It might have leaked from being overtightened. Also, make sure you run some new oil along the seal before you install the filter.

i would bet it was overtightened and streched the stud for the oil filter. also make sure you dont have two seals stacked in there which im sure you did since you cleaned the area.

Just to verify the obvious, you lubed the seal prior to installing right? I've never had one leak on me after properly lubing and torquing.

I love getting stuck oil filters off with a large screwdriver right through it and turn with both hands. Its very messy but rewarding. Gotta show your Jeep whos boss

Prolly not the problem cause it may not even be possible. Is the filter spinning on/off easily or are you having to wrench it on? Somewhere late 80's I think? the filter studs changed from SAE to metric threads. Correct filter?

Could the oil filter adapter possibly be cracked? It is just aluminum. If you where yamming on it hard to get the filter off it could've cracked it even worse. Or it might have warped it.

                            thats what I think.

After seeing the PO installed the heat riser valve incorrectly and noticing the dirvers side head was scorched and dark as compared to the passenger side head I think I need to weed through problems.

I hear ya. The PO of my Jeep messed it up so bad it wouldn't even start or run anymore. I said screw it and rebuilt the entire drivetrain.
