    Polish or Chrome bumpers?

Got a quote from Ogden chroming.

To chemical strip and polish and seal the bumpers they want $300 per bumper (Free shipping both ways)

    To chrome them, its $600.

Just wondered if anyone has had there bumpers stripped and polished?

Your $, but I wouldn't waste mine on bumpers.

I'd just sand and polish them.

Last time I checked it's ~$150 here in SoCal to get a bumper done, and I thought that was too much.

I think Crist Clapper on this sight had his done recently. Try searching or maybe Crist will chime in. Akron Anodizing quoted me $100 to strip and reanodize my razor grill, so a bumper should be about the same price.

It's a lot of work/elbow grease but doable. $300 a pop for chroming a bumper in todays EPA enviro saturated world IMHO isn't outrageous for a quality job especially with free shipping but you gotta really like chrome to spend the money. Makes sense restoring an old classic car but an 80's FSJ? You asked "anyone had their's stripped and polished?" To have shop do it I'm betting you'll be pretty close to what the plater wants for chrome. If economics are a concern, just bite the bullet, get comfortable and start sanding and polishing.

$300 for a sand and polish is a STEAL! Esp. with shipping included!

$600 for chrome doesn't sound too bad, either. But I've never priced it out, so I really don't know.

if they are in good condition, means no deep scratches, i would polish them myself........
i have done it in wintertime, 2-3 evenings, a lot of polishmaterial and special pads for the accudrillingmachine (i have done it with this). Result is very well!

If you do the chrome thing... Be sure your shop-folks understand the bumpers are anodized aluminum and require a base-coat of copper. If so... You should be good to go!

As far as cost... Labor is a factor. If the prep-work goes well, then the cost is dependent of the amount of repair(s) needed.

Keep us posted on your progress!

I was set on sending mine off to sand and polish but in the end wound up doing it myself in the driveway. They came out pretty decent for next to no $. Makes you appreciate it more IMO.

I did my own as well - came out nice BE SURE to protect the new metal, i'm using sharkskin protector from eastwood - its pricy at 50 bucks a bottle but it holds up to the salt and other nasties very well

i did not have time to protect the rear so i have to rebuff as its badly stained - this time i have some pro grade aluminum pre paint conditioner then i will clear coat them with my paint gun

When i was still able to work, my co-worker would get a wild hair sometimes and break out the polishing compounds & buffing wheels and go to town on aluminum aircraft parts. Looked just like the nickel plated parts. Have you considered chrome powder coat?
