    Welcome

You found the right place. Hard start could be a carb issue, lots of write ups on those. Welcome!

Does it start with the starting fluid the first time, then start pretty well on its own until it has sat for a few hours? if so, might be old fuel pump letting fuel drain out of lines. I had that until i changed fuel pump.

Scott, welcome. I love bumping into other people from Indy. Let me start by reminding you that this rig is old... Please don't be offended; it is just a fact. By that, I mean it will take some TLC to get everything where it needs to be and after that, it will be every bit as reliable as it was when it rolled off the factory floor...

This place is an incredible vault of information that will help you get your rig right where you want it. Post a picture of your rig. Help us understand the condition it is in now and we will try our best to help you get it the rest of the way...

i found a pattern, when i start i pull manual choke (no pumping) and turn key until it hits, push choke in abit and pump twice while turning key and it starts rough and levels out after about 10 sec. i can let sit for a hour no problem but two hours starting that pattern over.

going to start floor boards and body work this weekend.

More than likely when the choke is closed, its fully closed. And that's not how an engine is supposed to start (or can start). It just floods the carb because with the choke plate fully closed, its sucking too hard on gas and hardly any air.

The stock automatic choke does start off fully closed, but immediately opens up the right amount as soon as the engine hits and draws a vacuum. And its that vacuum that opens the choke plate just right to prevent flooding but keep it running rich until warm up. And upon warm up the choke plate is fully open.

Serious Advice: Rip out the manual choke and restore it to the proper automatic choke. It was installed by a previous owner who was too lazy or ignorant to deal with adjusting (or repairing) the automatic choke. Manual chokes on vehicle engines went out sometime just after WWII. They were invented precisely to prevent the aggravation of starting a vehicle cold, and having the starting "trick" change with both ambient and engine temperatures. They're only appropriate on small engines like lawn mowers, chain saws and weed-whackers anymore.

If you need a new carb (assuming you are still running the stock 2v manifold), I am sure I can find one in my garage.
