    My Son's 1974 J-10 Project

I'll start this thread with the thread in the "For Sales, Craigslist Adds" forum...

We're moving along on this. I did find out that this truck was the personal vehicle of Clarence Shook, Jeep Dealer and founder of Rancho Suspension. He sold it to Doug Hunt, former desert racer and father in law of Darrin York, also a former desert racer. Darrin was sponsored by Valveline, hence the paint job. Info came from here....http://www.race-dezert.com/forum/thr...-truck.125793/

The engine, a 401, is now at a local builder's shop. It is a "Z" code truck. We're working on going through everything else. The bed is pulled off to get the chassis cleaned up and Ospho on most surfaces including the bottom of the bed. They'll all get fresh paint. The Quadratrac seems to have a part time kit in it, but screwed up vacuum lines. The interior needs a lot of help. The truck is, fortunately, very rust free.

Cleaning and painting parts and the bottom side of the bed continues. Opened up the rear to verify the gears, 3.54, and found a nice sight......

A Detroit locker in there, not sure what all of the etching on the carrier and ring gear mean.

Well, the 401 is already 60 over and not good overall. So we're considering the options, it'll probably end up being the 360 I have that's a buildable core.

This is our current state of deconstruction ........

I am glad you were able to find the pedigree on this truck. Its a shame you are not able to use the 401( you can sleeve the block), and are you going to re-paint the same way? keep showing pics. Tim

I've tried to talk my son into going back with its retro paint job, he's inclined to go back to its original brown color. We considered sleeving the block or even building a stroker with a 360 block, but cost factors are hitting him on this. Building a motor and paint are hitting him pretty hard, not to mention rebuilding the interior and suspension. I have my own projects and warned him how it would add up.

It left for paint yesterday. The 360 is under construction.

Oddly enough, I'm pretty sure I bid on this car when it was in Texas. Very cool truck!

At this point, my son might be wishing someone else had bought it with what it's costing him to build it. We just got the engine back, the 360, from the builder yesterday. The truck is still at the shop doing the body and paint work.

The engine is on the stand and ready to go in, we built the 360. The body is in paint now and should be ready to pick up on Friday.

We brought it home today, so it's time to get going on the re-assembly. My Scrambler had to go to the barn....I'm not to happy about that.

For those familiar with Dynamat, is it worth it to do the floor, roof and maybe the back wall of the cab with it?

I Dynomatted everything. I suppose it does a good enough job of dampening resonance, when you do little sections here and there. The manufacturers just put dampening pads just in places. But I think it's worth it for sound deadening. I covered the whole floor, the roof, the inside the doors......and I'm glad I did, mine sounds and feels really solid.
