    1976 cherokee chief gas cap

Hey guys and gals my 1976 cherokee chief leaks fuel out of the fill cap on the trail and some times when full on the road.
I ordered a new cap. And wouldn't you know it doesn't fit, the part that goes into the filler kneck is to big by approx .060".

Its a RUGGED ridge p/n 17726.13 says on the box it replaces the original mfg no 5356793 for 63-71 model jeeps. Anyone have a better P/N for me?

    thanks chris

It appears according to the parts book that you have the correct cap unless your rig is originally a California rig. The parts book lists cap # 535 4485 as correct for a 76 Cherokee but it shows a superseding number of 535 6793. The 76 California cap # is 535 5837. If you can't find the correct cap for your filler neck it may be easier just to find the correct filler neck for your NOS cap. Just my two cents.

I do have a California rig. Damn commies! thanks for the info.

I am certain it is coming out of the cap as there is a wet dirt witness mark down the side of the jeep below the fuel cap. but could be coming out of the fill hoses as well cuz I can smell it fairly strong in the cockpit.

Check the table in the TSM - a '76 California Wagoneer has vapor recovery, and 49 states cars do not. This means the California cap is sealed, and the 49 states cap is vented. My '77 49-states J10 has no vapor recovery and a vented cap, for example. You will fail smog with a vented cap, I predict.

In my experience, the vented caps leak even though there is a labyrinth in the cap for the vented air/vapor to go through. This will be evident as a stain on the body where some slosh goes through the cap. Vapor recovery is a worthwhile improvement that you'll want to keep, if you have it. If you still have the under-hood charcoal canister, try sealing the vent in the center of the cap and see if it stops leaking.

the current cap with cracked seals is an aftermarket locking cap it has no vent. I don't need the locking cap. just want one that doesn't leak.

I ran a search on the net now I see all the caps I can find are Without Evaporative Emission System. Seems there hard to find, any suggestions?

Get the vented cap and plug the vent with Liquid Steel, JB Weld or such. There should be an obvious vent port on the back side of the cap.

Sorry, I overlooked that you have the proper vented cap and it does not fit. Someplace like this http://www.tanksinc.com/index.cfm/pa...prod/prd91.htm could possibly match a cap to your filler neck dimensions, or they could sell you a filler neck that fits a cap you can get from them, or even the factory vented cap. I'd get a cheap digital caliper and measure every dimension of the cap and fill hole.

You may need to get a '76-era 49 states filler plate and use a sealed-up vented cap to be compatible with vapor recovery. You could try one of the yards like Jake's or Montana Overland, or look for a part-out of a compatible year ('74-77). Looks like all you'd need is the filler plate that has the opening for the cap.
