Work .. work ... work.. 11 hours a day.

Then play with the Chero every night. Getting to the point where I am running out of things I can remove, and still keep it running. So the remaining stuff is loose and dropped with wires attached on the floor.

Fender wells loook so much better with all the "Stuff" removed ! LOL Of course, the large hole where the heater was looks kinda bad.... I am worried the "new" engine is gonna be too wide to fit between the heater housing and brake booster ? Hmmm

I'l get some updated pics soon.

I am waiting on the floorpans to arrive.. will patch those in and then it's :

"Off with it's Head !" [ well, body actually ]

Wife is just "resolved" I am gonna just live in the driveway till it goes to the shop. Kids just come out and visit me in the drivway. They seem to understand a bit better.

Neighbors ? They just glare as they walk their fancy dogs..... Oh well.

Edit: Located an NOS Rhino grill with a distant freind- it's on its way! And got some decent pie plates from my buddy [ free ! ]. Now just need some CJ lights and buckets..... My buddy has some, he's on vacation...

Another day of taking the Chero apart.... wife still does not get it. Hmm

Got all the wiring loose and disconnected everything I can and still keep it running. Making "high tech" labeling devices to mark where each wire came from [ masking tape and sharpie].

All the various parts and fasteners are in marked bags. It will be so much easier when it comes time to put it back together ! Only a few things to take off now- windshield trim, wiper moter / pivots.

Then its more cleanup and off the my buddies shop to remove the body. So, should I wait and do the floorpans after I pull the body? Or should I do it now before taking it over there? All glass will come out at the shop.

Body is coming off to modify the drivetrain/suspension... and will get some cleanup and detailing since, well you know, I went this far already.. lol

Notice all the holes in the firewall.... I think some of that Dynamat stuff is in order so I can plug a lot of the extra holes that held the jute/sound pads.

No blood for another 2 days now ! Whoo Hoo !

Good, heck, it's lookin' pretty bare! Great job..you'll have a show-quality restoration if you're not careful!

Can't wait to see the finished product.

Uh -I don't know about "show quality".. I am doing this in my driveway... lol

My plan is to make it "nice" and I do plan to wheel it. I have a window to get into the paint shop by mid Sept. So I need to kick it in high gear !

Next I plan to clean the underbody very well. Have been putting rust penetrate on lots of chassis bolts.... not too rusty, but can only help it come apart better.

I'm not certain what ob1jeeper is talking about, but the dash is bolted into the rig. There is a series of bolts underneath the windshield gasket. Some have been able to pry the seal up and work those screws out. These are two screws on each side that you can get to from underneath. There are also various bolt on braces than have to be removed. Then the metal dash and dash pad come out together. It is very easy to do once the windshield is out though, so I would wait until you get to that point.

Do me a favor. One of the pins in the round multipin connector in the above pic provides a ground for the instrument panel. Take a digital volt meter and check each one for continuity till you find the ground pin. Another member is having instrument panel problems and so am I with my 79. PM me if you want.

I had to fix the XJ tonight.. didn't get much time on the Chero. I did take a look at the cluster plug. It has letters on each cavity for each wire.

now, I didn't check it with the multi meter, but one of the wires was black. That is the universal color for ground, right? The black wire was in cavity "A".

If you have a FSM, that should tell you what color the ground wire is...

I think if you search the archives, there is some info on the cluster and its wiring??

More clean up and a major reorganization. I have been bagging and tagging all the stuff as I take it off, but wanted to group it neatly together for storage while I attack the body and chassis work.

So - SJ "kit" anybody ? lol

OK - been doing some stuff -

Tried a bunch of various seats.. all seemed to sit too high or would not mate to the stock trac. So, I got a set of 2001 TJ seats.. and cut the trracs down to about the right height. [ Look at the floorpan pic to see cut trac. 3" removed was the majic number btw]Need to adapt the mounting holes yet, but the seats tip foward... pic below

And today I really kicked on the Rhino grill. Hmmm, seems so easy watching it TV ?? I took a long time to get it together. And my welding "skills" are VERY rusty. see pic

And, got my floorpans today from OBX .. I must say, I am very happy with the fit ! That is going to be a job ! But am excited to tackle that next weekend... it is "Labor Day", right ? This is gonna be my labor.

OH, and the Jeep would not start after I powerwashed it. Hmm, figured I got some critical ign part wet. But No ! Turns out, some little rat stole all the gas out of the Jeep in the driveway ! Took me a day to figure that out. Duh. It had maybe 12 gallons in it.. no big deal. At least its running again !

EDIT : I cannot upload the pics ?? I made them very, very, very small. [ 100 x 35 in the end ]And it says it still exceeds the quota? It shows a lot of green in my alloted photo section ? [Edit-seems one can only have so many pics in a single post maybe? Deleted some and got a pic to load ]

Yes - chromed alum. Not going to hold up well to off road use I suspect ! lol

I am thinking of finding a very good 3 pc. They are steel, right ?

I have a very good set of three piece bumpers that I'd consider trading you if we can figure out shipping.

Thanks - been a bugger finding the right seats that fit the bill for a 2 door. Am working on welding up the final tracs now. Not pics yet.

Here's what I wrote about the seats in another post, I copied it over to this post- read on
__________________________________________________ _____

I am putting TJ seats in mine.. [2001]

The pass side is the problem.. dam wide tunnel !

So, I am using the TJ tracs, but cut down 3"... this gets you at the stock ride height for the seating position. Make sure to maintain the seat cusion angle when doing this. Also, a "Tip-N-Slide" unit would not work well due to the pivot mechanisim is in the area that needs to be cut off.

So, I am using manual driver tracs on BOTH sides..... the seat backs tip forward, and the pass seat has a nice pull tab on the front leading edge of the seat back. This lets you pull the seat foward.. there is a button on the lower seat backs as well - if you are in the back seat.

Now, the tracs are offset.... kinda like our FSJs.. but the pass side should really be inboard a bit.... if not, the armrest is too close to the seat and uncomfortable.

So out comes the hammer... I flattened the floor at the front of the tunnel area to let the trac sit in farther. The mounting holes do not line up. I will be welding a flat pc on the bottom of the trac to reach the holes.

Driver side is really no problem. Will have to adapt the mouting holes to the TJ track.

Now, the pass side has a cable that used to "trip" the Tip-N-Slide TJ trac. I think I can make a bracket that will pull the manual trac to the release position. The cable is tied to the seat back.. when it tips foward, it pulls the cable.

So what you ask ? Well, if I can get that to release the trac, I have a seat trac that will release when I tip the pass seat foward to get in the back.. How cool is that ! I am in mid project right now.. but will share when it's all done....

Tonight I tacked the tracs together while on the seat... they are seperate, but I want them off the seat so I can make the mounting brackets to the floor.

One pic is of the cut down TJ trac on the floor - with the 2 tracs tacked together. Now need to make up the floor brackets to pick up 3 of the original 4 holes.

Notice, I "adjusted" [ aka moved with a hammer ] the tunnel on the pass side. This is to get the seat inboard enough to make the armrest comfortable.

OK, now you're making me want it back. I know, I know I had my chance.
It's just looking great. Wish I had your motivation and determination.By the way I didn't use the can opener on it, I think this just had one PO
prior to me. Used it for fishing. Thanks for doing it right.

Hi Roy -

Sooo.. you figured out where your SJ went. Salty Michigan. I suspect you miss it somewhat, but hey, I think Steve saw another FSJ around your house? Is that right ??

Hey - as long as you're on - how many miles did you put on this thing ? And any chronic problems with the engine/trans/t case? I am selling it and would like to pass on any info up front. I only drove it around the block one time before I started to take it apart.

This is my first full size - and what a learning experiance ! I have been reading this site a LOT. It's been very, very, helpful to me in taking this on. [ and - thanks Dan ! for coming over and helping point out some things to look out for ]

As for motivation - I am pushing it before it gets cold and nasty here in Michigan. Not too bad doing it in the driveway - for now. Hope to take it to a metal-work guy to fix that nasty dent and rear pass flair. Next Tue is my target.. have truck and trailer ready.. even though it runs, no plate as of yet.
