    Broken Water Pump Bolts

1985 Wagoneer, 360. So I attempted to remove the water pump this weekend, I broke off the heads of 3 of the small 1/4 inch bolts and one is rounded off. The previous owner used orange permatex on all of them. Do these bolts all thread into the timing cover? If so, can I just remove the distributor, harmonic balancer and pull the cover? Thanks.

    If you have the space...
Heat 'em up and left hand drill bits they'll probably spin right out.

I've got right angle and regular air drills that are pretty small, and work well for stuff like this.
    Your mileage may vary.

If you have to pull the cover don't forget to loosen the oil pan bolts or you'll be fighting with it a lot.

Yes you can pull the whole cover/pump as a unit.

I would grab the rounded head with vise grips (if possible) and turn till it either comes out or snaps.
Did you ultimately get the water pump off? If you're lucky there will be 1/4" of bolt sticking out of the timing cover you can grab with vise grips. Heat up with a propane torch and wiggle back and forth till they break free. It they broke flush then I would drill them out.

Got enough of the bolt sticking out to weld on a nut?

Craftsman makes what Im going to call an easy out for a bolt. Its spiraled on the inside so when youre loosening it, its cutting onto the bolt. I snapped a bolt off in the thermostat housing and it backed it right out. I hit the bolt several times with a hammer, then hammered the easy out on.

Gotta have some bolt sticking out to cut into, of course.

The pump is still stuck on there. The bolts are snapped about 1/4 inch below flush. I got the rounded one out with that extractor tool. No luck with the reverse drill bits. Also does the AC compressor have to come out to pull the pump? I may just get the angle grinder out and cut it the Expletive Deleted!Expletive Deleted!Expletive Deleted!Expletive Deleted! thing off.

Don't remember if it has to but the extra room it created was worth it.

x2 I bought a set when I was removing the exhaust bolts on my wifes car which were rusted and rounded off. Hammered it on and it put the death grip on the nut and came right off no heat.

I ended up getting the pump off after heating it up and beating it with a hammer for hours, brute force and ignorance was the key. I had to cut a sleeve through the pump to break the upper long 1/4 free. There was enough Bolt sticking out to get them all out with vice grips.

Was there any reason to use Orange permatex on these smaller bolts?

I used absolutely no RTV when putting my new water pump on. I did use a product called Gasgacinch, stuff worked awesome.

Not really sure how I could've installed the oil pan gasket without it. I know that's not required for a water pump but its an example.
