You really should be asking the PRC's polit bureau directly for a definitive answer before spending big bucks. And get that "in writing".

A strong sub bureau of the PRC is C.A.R.B...just ask them about dsl motors?
The only thing more critical than dsl's to C.A.R.B is the rising cost of surf board wax and canned chile dude...

I understand California won't let you swap a diesel into a formerly gas car, and also any motor transplanted has to be the same age of the car or newer. Your best bet is to get a 75 or older rig and then do as you please.

why? i was always under the impression that diesels burn 'cleaner' then gasonline engines. if that is true, that would reduce emissions and be a good thing....

or am i going too far by assuming that the state of kalifornia uses simple logic?

Because this state sucks, that's why!

I think you can re-register it as a diesel; call up an inspection referee. Years back I talked to one named Gus and he was extremely helpful and friendly.

Personally I would (and did) bypass all this BS and just get a '75 or older vehicle.

I've been considering a GM diesel swap into my Wagoneer for a while. After being bitten a couple times by the California smog laws (for instance, after having swapped a 1963 aluminum-block Buick V8 into my '80 VW Vanagon :D ), I decided to do a bit of research before throwing a bunch of hard-earned Benjamins down the toilet.

You could always tell them it's a Family Truckster and put what you want in it, or you could move to someplace real...

In California, DO NOT TAKE IT TO A REFEREE !

                  Install your diesel engine.

                  Fill out this form...
                  http://www.dmv.ca.gov/forms/reg/reg256.pdf

Check the boxes under "B" that say "It is powered by" and "Diesel".
Go to your local DMV, have it inspected.
They will change the "G" on your registration under "Fuel" to a "D".

I understand the Simi Valley office is very good about this.

Thanks for the info all. Just doing some pre-project research before I get to far ahead of myself.
