I have never really cared for the under seat Flag shifter that were standard with the 80s TF727/NP208 combo found in the J trucks and NP208 equiped Cherokees.
Awhile back, I thought about doing a conversion to the floor shifter that was standard on the 80s T176/NP208 and T18a/NP208 combos. But, it was just a thought until I recently discovered that I could not shift into low range with the new Procomp seats. The bottom of the seat stuck out just enough to keep the old Flag shifter from fully engaging into low range.
I put out a Wanted ad and Grimgaunt stepped up and sold me everything I needed to make the conversion.
Why AMC/Jeep didn't do this from the beginning is beyond me.
Anyhow, here are the pics from the conversion that I did today.
Before conversion with standard Flag shifter.

NP208 floor shift compatible tunnel cover in place while making measurements for the linkage.

Measurements completed. i next cut out the carper and padding for the shift lever.

With all linkage connected and rubber boot added, it looks good and works great with low range. The only thing needed is to fasten down a home made trim ring around the boot.

A different view.

Keep in mind that I still do not have a knob for the shift lever. So, if anyone out there has an OEM shift knob available, please let me know.

That looks good. Yeah, I am not a big fan of my floor shifter except that it is easy to hide on emissions day.

I didn't know that Jeep ever had a shift lever other than the flag shifter for the NP cases. I would like a setup like that, guess I will start looking.

That looks good Mike! My flag shifter got a longer handle on it a few years ago after the 208 upgrade and just clears the Tuffy console. I like my cup & junk holders too much to do a stick conversion to my GW tho...

If you don't mind me asking, what was the damage for that setup?

I'd like to swap my case to that. Of course I'd like to put a stick shift in too...

I bought the whole setup including tunnel cover (excluding shift knob) from another member here for $45 including shipping. You can find them cheap. You just have to find them.

Looks nice! I've got computer stand on the hump so the flag shifter won't work for mine. I am swapping in a NP208 at some point here. I did not get the shifter etc with the one bought. Do you still have your old underseat setup from the 208? Is it for sale? I'm not sure if the one from my 229 will work.

I didn't want to be known as "Knobless in St. Louis". So, I found and bought an aftermarket universal knob. My choice was the knob below or the Chrome Skull with red eyes. It will do for now until I can locate the right OEM knob.

IIRC, the flag lever and linkage from the NP229 should work for the NP208 swap. I do have the linkage though if you want it. I'll have to clean it up first. It's got a mix of oil, mud, and road dirt all over.

Any good pics of the shifter before it went in? Thinking of making my own. Shouldn't be difficult.

Mike, the boot came from the member that sold me the parts. I have no idea where it came from. It doesn't look oem since the 4 speed rigs used a dual boot. But, it sure fits perfectly. I'll try to get ahold of him and see where he found it.
