Project Humpty '74 J20 Diesel Build UPDATED!

Hello all,
I've been busy working on this project for months now and I finally remember to talk to the owner about putting a post here on the forum detailing this build. I'll give a specs list, then link to a bunch of pictures. Please feel free to ask any questions.

Truck: 1974 Jeep J20. 40K original miles, barn find in Ohio.
Sheetmetal: NOS cab, fenders, valance, radiator support, doors. '67 Bed
Engine: Cummins 4BTA from a bread truck. Turbo charged, intercooled, 3.9L 4 cyl. 130HP stock.
Trans/Xfer: NV4500/Np205 from '90 Dodge 6bt truck. Same truck gave up its accessories for the engine
Axles: Stock J-20
Springs: Custom Alcan Springs 8 leaf front, 7 leaf rears (Replace the 3 leaf front, 2 leaf rear original springs)
Bilstien Shocks
Dual Battery Tray
Aftermarket Heat and A/C mounted in the cab behind the dash
Extensive Dynamat in the cab
Hydraboost brakes Discs front, Drums Rear. SS fuel and brake lines

The photos didn't show up for me but it might have been my computer. Must be nice to have a diesel build all done and running, would be great to have. Diesel is actually cheaper than gas again here.

I look forward to seeing more.

I have watched and assisted (just a little) with this project and this truck is really cool! The oil burner along with the HV4500 and NP205 is a great drivetrain. Were Zack find some of these NOS parts still amazes me! he cab still had tags and stickers from the factory!

Those inner fenders were a little rough.


Looks like a cool build...I was thinking about building a battery tray for mine eventually right where you put that one. Thanks for the pic ideas.

Yes they were, and so was the underside of the bed, but the inside was great because of the cab. Original owner only drove it in the winter and then parked it in the barn, so it got eaten from the inside out. No worries, have NOS inner fenders to replace them.

Anyone else having trouble seeing the pics?

pic problems

Hey Zack,
I had a lil trouble seeing the picts... kinda looked like thumbnails that wont get bigger??

In the top right corner, click on GRID and it will make them all a litttle bigger, then click on a single pic and it should make it very big. You could also use the slideshow and see them one at a time in large format.

It will be funny to watch people try and figure out what year it is with the '74 frame and suspension, 80's browless cab and a '67 bed with round taillights...

Welcome from up the hill. You should put that Diesel into a Jeep!

Zack, That is looking awesome. I have a '77 J-20 that I want to do the same with so I have a good strong work truck. Thanks for the pics, they worked first time for me.

Yes, Vintage Air/Hot Rod Air. I put it over in the pass area instead of in the middle. Fits behind the dash nicely and doesn't hang down as far as a stock AC unit. Part of the battery tray for a CJ. Had to modify the inner fender for the third mount.

It depends which type of mounts you want to use. I used the hydro mounts and am taking a bunch of flack from some of the diesel guys that they can't be mounted past 4 degrees or they don't work. I don't get it, the forces work out, but whatever. I can make you a pair of plates like the ones I started with to bolt to the motor. Its a great starting point for making your own...
