Hole in dash pad where speaker goes/need a fix

My dash pad was perfect until I dropped some chain through it while pulling the body off the frame. Looking for some ideas on covering up my screw up. Maybe an after market speaker cover, but I don't want something sticking up much higher than the pad. Here is what I'am dealing with. Thanks in advance.

    Wow, bad word...

Maybe sink a shallow tray into it?

Don't know if it's what you're looking for but may work for you. I've got some speaker grilles that are rectangular with the short sides curved, approx 6"x9" overall. They are painted flat black from the manufacturer(Pioneer?). Good condition as in not rusted or bent. On other rigs I used them for what you're dealing with and just mounted it with a few dabs silicon to hold it in place. If you want to try one drop me a PM with your mailing info and I'll send you one, no charge.

Hey Joe, thanks for the offer. If I decide to go that route I'll send you a pm. SJTD, I never really thought of a tray as a possible fix for this, but that might just work for me! Thanks, Darin. I'am going to start trying to figure out how I will do this.

You could always have the pad covered, and have the upholsterer install a piece of solid plastic over it.
I did that with the Cherokee dash pad I have.

Okay, I made a tray to fit into the speaker part of the dash. To my eye, it doesn't look right. It sits to forward in the dash, I don't like it. The ideal fix would be to recover as mentioned. I don't want to spend the money on that. I think I will find a low profile speaker cover to take care of the hole.

I painted it black just to see what it would look like. I was going to cover it in vinyl if I like it. But I think I will pass.

                  That looks great!

I mean if you want to, maybe use a truck bed liner on it or even spray with a glue then use a flocking powder on it to give it some texture?

I does look good through the window but I see what you mean about it being too far forward. Maybe make it more bigger?

But I doubt you want to hack up the pad more.

Darin, I have a black dash pad that I think will work for a replacement. I always use the early eyebrow pad found on kaiser rigs. This one is a mid 70's AMC pad. It has less pronounced defroster holes. It has the vinyl face that covers where the kaiser speakers are.
Let me go get a picture....

The dash pad was super dusty. I wiped it with a damp paper towel and that always looks like krap. So it needs cleaning. It has a bunch of what look like 10-32 studs on the back.
Is this the same dash pad you have?

One defroster hole is cracked. It could be glued with a backing and should hide under the windshield gasket. I used a heat gun from a distance to shape the pad and get it to lay perfectly before the gasket went in.

If you can use it please send me a PM. I have been loosing power like crazy. If there is a delay getting back to you, that is why... 9 times so far this winter.

Yes, looks like what I have. Looks to be in better shape than mine. Thanks for pulling it out for me to take a look at it. I have a friend bring me a low profile cover he has. If I like it, I'am going to go with what I have. If I hate it I will send you a PM. Thanks again Al.
