  • What exactly is a CTO?

    I've come across several references to CTOs on this site (thank you, Dr. Barry!) and was just curious as to what the heck they are! Is this something I should be familiar with?

    "Coolant Temperature Override" or some such nonsense; it's a switch that operates based on coolant temp.

      it means coolant temperature override.its that funny lookin valve thats screwed into the intake manifold and has vacuum lines attached to it.im pretty sure it retards or advances the timing when the engine temp gets to a certain deg.(someone correct me if im wrong)ive disabled mine a long time ago and im now running an alum edelbrock manifold.i wanted to find a nice plug for the hole but the threads seem unique.
      this post is also a test to see if i can get the smiley things to work.

        It doesn't do this directly; it simply switches between a port or manifold vacuum source. Or for the EGR, it shuts off or permits the vacuum signal to reach the appropriate valve. They also control the thermostatic air-cleaner and the AIR diverter valve in some years.

        It's a standard NPT fitting; probably a 3/8" size.
