    Instrument cluster

so, nothing in my instrument cluster works, and I was wondering if that could be because there is one fuse for the whole cluster and it is out, or if it is just a coincidence that everything is broken. It would be kinda nice if I could tell how much gas I have and how fast I am going. But hey, whata you expect for $450.

The speedometer is cable-operated so electronics have nothing to do with it but the other gauges can be inop because of a fuse. On the automatics, the instrument cluster shares a fuse with the tranny kickdown and is located on the lower right corner of the fuse block. I believe it uses a 20A glass fuse.

As for the speedometer, it may be easier to remove the cable at the transfer case end and spin it from there. Most likely it has a broken cable if it doesn't work at all. Also, check and see if you have a cylindrical object with a wire on the inside of your left inner fender where the speedometer cable goes in/out of. I had one of these on my J4000- it is a spedometer controlled spark switch- and it went out on my truck causing the speedo to read zip. I believe that there was a very early service bulletin on these units to unplug the electrical portion; it was unplugged when I got my J4000 but the actual unit was still there so the speedo would work. I removed it when it finally broke internally and replaced with a one-piece cable from a 78 J10.
